Lions notes: Ryan Broyles fined $10,000 by NFL

Lions notes looks at Ryan Broyles, Calvin Johnson, Ndamukong Suh and much more.

• Ryan Broyles was fined $10,000 by the NFL on Friday for the illegal crackback block he had in last week's game. Also from that game, Minnesota Vikings linebacker Jasper Brinkley was fined $21,000 for a helmet-to-helmet hit on Calvin Johnson. I get fining players for targeting an opponent's head, but I really don't understand why every little penalty here or there seems to be drawing a fine these days.
• The Lions have selected Jahvid Best to be their 2012 Ed Block Courage Award recipient.
• I would expect the Lions to activate Drayton Florence from injured reserve on Saturday based on comments Jim Schwartz made on Friday. The Lions technically can wait until next week to activate him, but there'd really be no sense in waiting. I think the only reason the Lions have been waiting this long is to practice all week before having to actually release someone.
  
• The NFL went back and credited Ndamukong Suh with a sack in last week's game against the Vikings.
• Suh and Calvin Johnson both came in fourth at their position in the Pro Bowl voting update that was released earlier this week.
• Johnson is done talking about injuries with the media after what happened last week.
• An anonymous NFC scout told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel that Suh takes plays off, doesn't demand excellence from himself and is coddled. While this wasn't quite on the same level as the previous attacks from an anonymous rival general manager, it was more anonymous criticism directed at a Lions player. Suh responded by echoing Dominic Raiola's thoughts and saying that he wished "people would kind of grow up and be a man or a woman and say exactly how they feel and put their name behind it."
  
• Gunther Cunningham responded to the anonymous scout's comments and vehemently fired back over the coddled comment. Cunningham seemed peeved at the notion that he would let a player take plays off, and he has every right to be upset. If you've ever watched Cunningham coach, you know that coddling a player is not something in his mindset.
• Raiola thinks it's "disrespectful" that people are counting out the Lions but are talking up the New Orleans Saints, which are also 4-5, as a team that could make the playoffs. I certainly get where Raiola is coming from, but the reason people are doing this is pretty simple; just look at the schedule. The Lions have the toughest remaining schedule in the NFL, and they are not on a hot streak right now. That is not a good combination for a team that has struggled to a 4-5 start.
• Raiola was mic'd up in Minnesota last Sunday.
• Green Bay Packers cornerback Tramon Williams says he is "definitely Optimus Prime." Good luck with that.
• Lions defensive line coach Kris Kocurek celebrated his birthday this week by getting a Gatorade shower from Sammie Hill and Corey Williams, according to Carlos Monarrez.
  
• New Lions cornerback Pat Lee is wearing No. 27, which was Alphonso Smith's number before he was released.
• Check out these two stats from Pro Football Focus, which Cunningham apparently reads quite a bit:
• Soldier Field is getting resodded yet again. Do you think those in charge in Chicago will ever realize that they are fighting a losing battle and just cave and install FieldTurf? It doesn't seem safe for the players to be playing on such a crappy field.
