According to emarketer, 83% of companies with over 100 employees are on Facebook and 53% are on Twitter. The world of social media can be confusing
If large companies are seeing the benefit in taking advantage of social media, than there is no reason for a small company not to do the same. In a sense, social media levels the playing field for someone with a budget of 1,000 dollars against someone with a budget of 1 million dollars. A small company with ten employees can end up with the same amount of Facebook followers as a company with 1,000 employees. The possibilities are endless as long as you know what you are doing. All businesses, large and small, have access to the same social media and can do the same kinds of things with this technology. ???

This is why it is not surprising to me that 90% of small businesses are doing their networking online, according to an article published in the LA Times. And 78% of people that said that social networking online was just as, if not more, important than networking in person. It allows you to connect with more people, with no limitation on the location of these people, and it can be done in a shorter amount of time than networking in person. In just one Tweet, you could find your company connecting with people from all over the country. Social media just makes it that much easier to expand your ideas and practices of your company.???

However, what exactly do you gain from networking with someone that lives across the country? What does it matter if another small business ?likes? your Facebook status or comments on your picture? This is something that a lot of business owners are struggling with? they are putting all of this effort into their social media, but they are not sure exactly what they are gaining out of it. Like all networking, it is not something that you are always going to see immediate returns on. Maybe the person from across the country that likes your Facebook status is going to have connections with a potential big time client that lives in your area. This is not something that is always going to be likely, but there is the possibility that meaningless networking can eventually lead to big things. ???

?Also according to the LA Times, 42% of businesses said that a quarter of their new customers came from social media sites. This is because that with Facebook and FourSquare, customers can check in to businesses to let friends and families know that they are there. The power of word-of-mouth and personal recommendations can never be underestimated. This can be good and bad, of course. Businesses always have to look at what is being said about them on social media sites. They cannot control the conversation that consumers are having about them in a place where all other potential customers can see. ???

Although?businesses cannot control what customers are saying, they can choose how they respond to their customers and what they do with criticisms that they come across through their social media. This allows for constant reviews from customers so that small businesses can constantly be adapting their services without the use of expensive surveys or consultants.????
