I came across a statement on Facebook earlier this week that stated, ?Each year I look at the way I was the year before and think, what in the world was I thinking?? It got me wondering how some of us change over days, weeks, months, but most importantly, years. Physically, we all tend to mature but growing mentally is self-evaluated.
When we?re children, we typically rely on our parents for everything. In middle school, we are all still immature and awkward. In high school, we start to look a little better as we slowly but surely emerge out of the physically awkward stage into the socially awkward one.
In-groups and out-groups develop. We go through what we, at fourteen years old, most likely refer to as severe emotional distress from entering and exiting relationships and friendships. There are the ?socially accepted? groups of popular girls and popular guys; the athletes, drama-lovers and musicians. We may get our first job for a little spending money. Then we graduate and likely move on to college where the REAL growing begins.
Now we enter college, where we accept the 4 or more years of hard classes with even harder professors no matter where we attend school. Now, take this with a grain of salt if you will, but this is how I view growing and maturing before stepping out into the real world where we NEVER stop learning from experience over classrooms. Many of the lessons we learn in college serve as training courses for what we must use in the real world.
- Step out of comfort zones ? Joining on campus groups helps grow socially and professionally. We learn how to deal with people of different cultures, backgrounds, sexes, hobbies and races.
- Dorm rooms/ apartments ? We learn how to live in conditions with people who may be dirtier/cleaner than we?re use to. We learn how to live with another or, several other people. We fight but learn how to compromise for the sake of our sanity.
- Stress, on stress, on stress ? that was a musical reference to a rap song for those of you who didn?t know (racks on racks on racks). I thought it was clever. We experience levels of stress beyond what we ever imagined with assignments/projects, studying and exams. Perhaps similar to the stress of work, family obligations and bills that we?ll surely incur after graduation.
- Momma and daddy don?t hold our hands anymore ? We don?t HAVE to go to class but we learn the responsibility that it?s a very smart idea to go so we get up at the crack of dawn and drag ourselves to the 8 o?clock class we dread.
- Work ? We realize the importance of needing sleep to get up for work or to study over partying rather quickly. We also learn how to live on a budget because we take advantage of the statement, ?I?m a broke college student.?
All in all, we become a lot stronger than we realize from college, but come across the reality that in 4 years we will be out in the real world trying to find a job. We learn from dealing with other people, maintaining a relationship/friendship, school work and social groups, we learn how to multi-task and better ourselves through rough times and pushing through them. We may learn a few useful things from that communication, math or science class, but we learn much, much more outside of it.
