University of Illinois cell and developmental Biology professor Fei Wang and colleagues have created a new technique to study how myeloids, a type of blood stem cell, become the white blood cells important for immune system defense against infections and tissue damage. This approach offers new insights into the molecular mechanisms at work during myeloid differentiation, and may improve our ability to treat myeloid diseases like leukemia, the researchers report. Their findings appear in the journal Blood.

Myeloids are blood stem cells from bone marrow or the spinal cord that differentiate into common types of white blood cells like neutrophils and macrophages. Deficiencies in this differentiation process can cause leukemia.

Researchers in the field had previously studied myeloid differentiation by using cells taken directly from animals, or they transformed leukemia tumor cells to their previous myeloid stem cell-like states. Primary cells are hard to grow and manipulate genetically, however, and tumor cells still contain the genetic mutations that caused them to divide uncontrollably in the first place. The drawbacks of these systems prompted Wang to develop a better method for studying the mechanisms of myeloid differentiation.

Wang and his team began by turning mouse embryonic stem cells into myeloid progenitor cells. They then added a protein called Hoxb8 to these cells that had been shown previously to immortalize myeloid progenitor cells.

?"This really simplified the whole system, so, number one, we didn't have to deal with animals or human bodies, and, number two, we immortalized these cells so that they can be easily handled in culture and maintain normal myeloid progenitor cell genetic information," Wang said. ??

The researchers wanted to prove that their model is effective in helping them determine the molecular mechanisms important to myeloid differentiation, so they turned to a class of enzymes, called protein kinases, that are known to mediate processes like cell development, immune response, and cell differentiation. The researchers screened a variety of protein kinase inhibitors to find potential key regulators of myeloid differentiation.

A protein kinase inhibitor of a molecule called mTor, a master regulator of cell behavior, was found to interfere with myeloid differentiation, signifying that mTor is a key regulator of this process. Further experiments showed that this molecule is necessary for myeloid differentiation.

"This is the first evidence showing that this molecule plays a significant role in myeloid differentiation," Wang said.

This finding serves as a proof of principle that the new approach provides a powerful tool for future studies of normal and abnormal myeloid differentiation, Wang said.

"Using this system, we can introduce genetic manipulations that tell us something very important about how normal myeloid differentiation works, and what kind of molecular events in this process can go wrong, leading to diseases like leukemia," Wang said.

"People can use this as a platform for large-scale screening analysis for drugs that potentially can promote myeloid differentiation and can slow down or stop myeloid disease processes."

Apple Fans Are Angry About The New iPads - Business Insider

The fanfare of Apple's (AAPL) announcement of two new iPads Tuesday quickly gave way to backlash from consumers who say the short life span of Apple products is becoming wearisome -- and expensive.

Apple surprised fans by unveiling a revamped, full-size iPad, just seven months after releasing the third-generation iPad. The new, full-sized tablet was overshadowed by the star of the event -- the iPad Mini -- but not overlooked by owners of what had been the most up-to-date iPad. Many were irked that they had just dropped $500 on what they thought was a cutting-edge tablet, only to watch it fall to near obsolescence Tuesday.

"I bought a iPad 3 in August and definitely feel cheated," Phillip Briseno posted on this newspaper's Facebook page.

Steve Higgs said that when he bought his third-generation iPad on Sunday, Apple should have told him "that in 48 hours it would be outdated."

iPad owners in the Bay Area weren't alone in their frustration. An unscientific flash poll of about 1,400 Apple users by CouponCodes4u, a coupon website that frequently polls consumers, found that the majority of owners of the suddenly old tablet -- 83 percent -- felt "cheated" by the iPad 4 announcement.

But on Wednesday, analysts had one message

for annoyed Apple customers: Get over it.

"I don't think they (Apple) owe people anything," said Stephen Baker, vice president of industry analysis at NPD Group. "If the iPad 3 worked for you great two days ago, it still works for you today, so I don't know why you would feel cheated."

Many Apple users have everything they need with the second- or third-generation iPads, some analysts said, and shouldn't feel compelled to buy an upgrade just because Apple has released one.

"Reasonable consumers can assess whether they even need the thing," said John Simpson, a consumer advocate at California-based nonprofit Consumer Watchdog. Simpson said he is the happy owner of the first-generation iPad.

But new Apple products, which are kept secret until the company unveils them with great celebration, are some of the sexiest for gadget-lovers to get their hands on. Apple has a loyal following of consumers who lust after its newest products and the emotional letdown of the short life of the third-generation tablet may have hit this group particularly hard, Simpson said.

For those trying to sell that tablet, the news was particularly disappointing -- its price is expected to plummet, and the iPad 4 will start at about $500, just what they paid for their new and now outdated device.

The fourth-generation iPad offers some nice perks. It will double the speed of the Wi-Fi connection and has iOS 6, which can't be installed on the original iPad. The upgrade also moves the iPad onto the Lightning connector, the smaller connection introduced on the iPhone 5 last month.

Apple had been upgrading tablets on a near-annual basis since launching the first iPad in early 2010, and the quick turnaround created some angst. With Tuesday's announcement shaking up Apple's routine, some wonder if the Cupertino company will move to twice-annual upgrades to minimize the pressure that surrounds its product launches.

"That's one of Apple's greatest challenges," said Tom Mainelli, a research director and consumer expert at research firm IDC. "There's this sense of disappointment if they don't knock your socks off with every announcement."

Others, though, say Apple wanted to move its tablet release into the fourth quarter -- just before the holidays and when most competitors are releasing their latest tablets. Microsoft will release the Surface tablet on Friday, the same day it launches Windows 8.

Whether Apple sticks with annual releases or begins upgrading the iPad more frequently, consumers don't need to keep up, analysts say, because they can hold onto tablets for a two or 2 1/2 years -- about the timeline for operating system upgrades.

The life span of tablets can also be expanded when families pass them down to younger generations. Apple product owner John Engel said he passes his iPhone and iPads down to his four kids. While he doesn't mind using the older products and still uses the original iPad for work and reading, he said he was disappointed that Apple would not upgrade it to iOS 6. To use devices effectively for a full two years, Engel said Apple should allow customers to update them equally -- whether it's the first or fourth generation.

Egyptian Abortion, American Choice - NYTimes.com

Most of our friends in Egypt had experienced some form of a pregnancy loss, and we knew this going in. Here, pesticide use is rumored to be responsible for the staggering number of miscarriages, birth defects and stillbirths. Still, when I became pregnant for the third time, during my husband?s first tour with the State Department and our second year living in Cairo, I was thrilled. And when I reached the end of the first trimester, we believed that we had overcome whatever the odds were. I was confident as I lay next to the ultrasound machine. I was also alone. I had done this twice before and didn?t think my husband needed to battle Cairo traffic to be there with me.

My first stretch of quiet in some time left me alone to contemplate this third child. I was showing by then and enjoying the attention of my colleagues, hotel staff and people on the street. I was given a free piece of falafel from a vendor outside. A woman on the street told me I was having a boy, the highest blessing she could have bestowed. I began, in a moment of connectedness and spirituality that hadn?t defined either of my other pregnancies, to love this child.

The technician was cold, quick and calculating with the results. There was a sac present that indicated a cystic hygroma. The cranium was too small and the heartbeat too slow. She told me that I could take two minutes to cry, then could go in to see the doctor. In her words, it was God?s will.

I told her that I was not religious. She apologized. I waited to speak with the doctor, who confirmed that the chances of a healthy baby were effectively zero. The baby would likely be stillborn in the seventh or eighth month. If carried, miraculously, to term, it would suffer from Trisomy 18, likely Down syndrome and heart failure. It did not possess a nasal bone.

As a society, we?ve characterized one type of pregnancy and one type of abortion. A woman can keep a healthy pregnancy, or terminate one that she had been forced to conceive, or that could potentially kill her. We fell outside this dichotomy. But it was within its legal framework that my husband and I accepted that to minimize trauma on my body, and on our family, we had to terminate.

I don?t believe that we didn?t make a choice. Other women may have carried to term, or as close to term as possible, a child whose condition could allow it to live for a few days, or weeks, or maybe a few years. But faced with the impossibility of this loss, we chose to face it then, before a child had the chance to win our hearts and let us hope for the impossible.

The abortion happened in Arabic and English, and I was grateful for the occasional pieces of conversation I didn?t understand. It happened in an understaffed hospital, in which I lay in bed with the fetus for 20 minutes after it was expelled, waiting for a nurse to remove it. I didn?t want to see it, and neither did my husband. That was another choice we had made. We came home that night, drank some wine and focused on my physical recovery. I rested. In the coming days, as we collected and submitted the paperwork for our insurance company, the loss of a baby that we had briefly imagined began to sink in. We had wanted the age gap and family dynamic that we had begun to believe was coming to us. We knocked off work early, and the children ? babies, really, not the oldest and middle child that my fatigued, pregnant body had come to see them as ? ate dinner with us on the couch, smeared hummus over everything and took full advantage of their space to behave as children in a household that loved them and had deeply wanted them from the start.

Then our insurance company responded. Our claim had been denied. Because the pregnancy was not the result of rape or incest and did not threaten my life, it was considered an elective procedure. We relied on federal insurance, the same plan available to all State Department employees. It?s a basic plan, adequate for our typical needs, but bound by legal restrictions concerning federal spending and abortion. We gathered the paperwork necessary to rebut their claim, but knowing its futility, began digging up $5,000 to pay for the abortion.

While the tone and content of the abortion debate has shifted and raged over the past several years, a steady 50 percent have believed that abortion should only be legal under the hardest of circumstances. My insurance company did not lie, and they didn?t make up the rules. In keeping with this moderate stance, they rejected our claim. We can, by giving up a trip home, stretching our grocery budget and ending our date nights, pay for our choice. But what?s been lost in this compromise is how tough that choice can be.

Why winning?or losing?a nail-biter would be historic for Obama

As the last debate approaches, the specter that haunted me a while back still hovers over this campaign: the possibility that we may be faced on Election Night with two, three, many Floridas. I now imagine both parties deploying AWACS filled with lawyers and organizers, circling the country, parachuting forces into New Hampshire, Florida, Virginia, Ohio, Iowa and Colorado as state after state deadlocks on Election Night.

Whether or not this nightmare comes true?and I devoutly hope it does not?this campaign has already earned its place in the annals of the unusual. An incumbent president facing a very close election is overwhelmingly the exception, rather than the rule.

Since the beginning of the 20th century, only three incumbents have won close elections.

Woodrow Wilson in 1916 won a 3-percentage-point popular vote margin, but it was California?s 13 electoral votes that gave him the White House?votes he won with a 3,700-vote plurality.

Harry Truman?s 1948 upset was won with about a 4.5-point popular vote plurality, but it was his remarkably close victories in Ohio, Illinois and California?each won by well under 1 percent of the vote?that put him back in the White House.

[Political junkie? Sign up for the Yahoo! News Daily Ticket newsletter today]

George W. Bush won in 2004 by about 2.5 points, and a similar margin in Ohio gave him his second term. A 60,000 vote switch there would have produced the second straight election where the national popular vote winner was denied the presidency.

If the Romney campaign takes heart from the infrequency of a close incumbent victory, it should consider the other side of the coin. Only one incumbent has lost a close contest: Gerald Ford in 1976, who lost nationally by 2 points, but who would have won with a shift of some 14,000 votes in Ohio and Mississippi.

These elections are clear departures from the norm, where an incumbent wins either comfortably or overwhelmingly (Theodore Roosevelt, FDR, Johnson, Nixon, Reagan, Clinton) or loses in similar fashion (Taft, Hoover, Carter, George H.W. Bush).

There is, of course, the possibility that the ground will shift in the last two weeks. A decisive debate performance, a late revelation, a sudden, seismic event at home or abroad could turn this cliffhanger into a rout.

As of now, though, 2012 looks as if it?s about to join that foursome of elections, one that will require gallons of caffeine on Election Night and the next morning before we learn whether the moving vans will be called to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.

Wisconsin police search for man after 3 killed, 4 wounded in mall ...

BROOKFIELD, Wis. -- Police in Wisconsin searched Sunday for a man suspected of killing three people and wounding four others in a shooting at a spa in suburban Milwaukee.

Brookfield police told WTMJ-AM the shooting happened about 11 a.m. Sunday at a spa across the street from the Brookfield Square Mall. The mall, a country club adjacent to the spa, a nearby hospital and other buildings were locked down, local media reported.

Brookfield Police Lt. John Beth said a bomb squad from the Milwaukee County Sheriff's Department was at the spa. He wouldn't say why the unit was there but said it was not routine to have it respond to a shooting.

Spokesmen for the FBI and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives said their agencies also had agents participating in the investigation.

Milwaukee FBI spokesman Leonard Peace said his agency sent a SWAT team and hostage negotiators, among others.

Online court records showed a temporary restraining order was issued against Haughton in Milwaukee County Circuit Court on Oct. 8 because of a domestic abuse complaint.

Beth Strohbusch, a spokeswoman for Froedtert Memorial Hospital -- one of the buildings reportedly locked down -- said four shooting victims were taken there, and three more were expected. She said none of the four already received were in critical condition.

The shooting took place at Azana Day Spa, a two-story, 9,000-square-foot building across from the mall in a middle- to upper-class community west of Milwaukee.

It was the second mass shooting in Wisconsin this year. Wade Michael Page, a 40-year-old Army veteran and white supremacist, killed six people and injured three others before fatally shooting himself Aug. 5 at a Sikh temple south of Milwaukee.

The shooting at the mall took place less than a mile from where seven people were killed and four wounded on March 12, 2005, when a gunman opened fire at a Living Church of God service held at a hotel.

Rev Jackson says son going to Mayo for checkup

(AP) ? U.S. Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr., who has given no hint of when he'll return to work four months after taking medical leave, will head back to the Mayo Clinic for a checkup "soon," his father, the Rev. Jesse Jackson, said Sunday.

The Democratic congressman from Illinois was released from the Rochester, Minn., clinic in September after seeking treatment for bipolar disorder and gastrointestinal issues. He has been with his family in Washington since, but has not appeared in public, campaigned beyond a recent robocall or said when he'll return to Capitol Hill. His spokesmen will only say that Jackson remains on the Nov. 6 ballot.

Jackson's father, a prominent civil rights leader, said the congressman will go back to Mayo in the near future, but would not say when or for how long. He said only doctors could determine if he would be able to return home immediately or receive further inpatient treatment.

"He has not regained his balance altogether," the elder Jackson said. "But he's seeking his balance."

He said his son has an "overwhelming desire to get back to work," but any predictions were premature.

Mayo Clinic spokeswoman Duska Anastasijevic said Jackson is not a current patient and she could not confirm whether he has plans to check into the clinic. Jackson spokesman Frank Watkins said he didn't have any further information.

Many questions about the congressman's medical leave have gone unanswered. He first took medical leave in June for what staff described as exhaustion, but the information wasn't disclosed publicly until two weeks later.

Since then, information has come in spurts. It took weeks for his office to say where and for what Jackson was being treated.

The timing of his leave also has invited scrutiny.

Jackson ? just weeks from the election ? remains under a House Ethics Committee investigation for links to imprisoned former Gov. Rod Blagojevich. The committee is looking into allegations that Jackson was involved in discussions about raising money for Blagojevich's campaign in exchange for an appointment to President Barack Obama's vacated U.S. Senate seat. And the announcement of the leave came just days after a former fundraiser connected to those allegations was arrested on unrelated federal medical fraud charges.

Jackson has repeatedly denied any wrongdoing and has said his name will be cleared.

More recently, the Chicago Sun-Times reported that there is a federal probe related to his campaign finances.

The congressman, who first won office in 1995 special election, faces two little-known candidates on the November ballot. He's widely expected to be re-elected to a ninth full term despite the fact that he has not appeared in public for months. Jackson's Chicago-area district is heavily Democratic and many community leaders and mayors have endorsed him.

Jackson has said recently that he sees doctors twice a day while at the family's home in Washington. His wife, Chicago Alderman Sandi Jackson, has said that only doctors will be able to say when he can return to work.

The congressman's first communication to the public since the leave came Saturday in a robocall to voters in which he asked for patience.

"I am anxious to return to work on your behalf, but at this time it is against medical advice, and while I will always give my all to my constituents, I ask for your continued patience as I work to get my health back," he said in the recorded call.

His opponents ? a Republican college professor and postal worker running as an independent candidate ? blasted the move.

"As we wait for the Congressman to return, we have no voice. And now the Congressman is saying he has no answer about when he will return," Republican Brian Woodworth said in a statement late Saturday.

(AP) ? Heading into the campaign's final weeks, Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney is upping his criticism of President Barack Obama's plans for a second term, accusing the Democrat of failing to tell Americans what he would do with four more years. The Obama campaign is aggressively disputing the notion, claiming it's Romney who hasn't provided specific details to voters.

At campaign events and in a new ad out Saturday, Romney is setting up the closing weeks as a choice between what he says is a "small" campaign that's offering little new policy and his own ambitious plan to fundamentally change America's tax code and entitlement programs.

The new Romney ad criticizes the president's policies on debt, health care, taxes, energy and Medicare, arguing that Obama is simply offering more of the same. The campaign did not say where the spot would air.

"Have you been listening to the Obama camp lately? They have no agenda for the future, no agenda for America, no agenda for the second term," Romney told a crowd of thousands who gathered in a band shell just off Daytona Beach. "They've been reduced to petty attacks and silly word games. Just watch it ? the Obama campaign has become the incredible shrinking campaign."

Romney's running mate, Rep. Paul Ryan, continued the line of criticism Saturday at campaign stops near Pittsburgh and in Belmont, Ohio, saying Obama has not laid out a policy agenda for the country.

"He's not even telling you what he plans on doing," Ryan told a rain-soaked crowd of about 1,100 people at a campground in coal-rich eastern Ohio.

Ryan urged people to vote early, saying, "The one thing you can do is elect a man named Mitt Romney who will end this war on coal and allow us to keep these good paying jobs."

Obama's campaign disputes the notion that the president hasn't outlined a detailed second-term agenda, pointing to his calls for immigration reform, ending tax breaks for upper income earners, fully implementing his health care overhaul and ending the war in Afghanistan.

In a statement sent after Romney's Friday night event, Obama campaign spokesman Danny Kanner ticked through a series of policy items, calling them "just part of President Obama's agenda for a second term."

Obama, at the Democratic National Convention, called for creating 1 million manufacturing jobs over the next four years with a mix of corporate tax rate cuts and innovation and training programs. He has set a goal of cutting the growth of college tuition in half over the next 10 years. He also has called for Congress to pass proposals he made last year that include includes tax credits for companies that hire new workers and funding for local municipalities to hire more teachers, police officers and firefighters.

As for why Republicans would back the same proposals they have already voted against, Obama has told supporters he expects his re-election would "break the fever" on Capitol Hill that led to gridlock during his first term.

The president's aides are particularly irked by the questions about Obama's second-term agenda, because they say it's Romney who has failed to provide voters with details. They point to his refusal to provide specifics about his tax plan or outline what he would replace the president's health care overhaul with if he makes good on his promise to repeal the federal law.

An independent group backing Obama, though, is trying to renew attention on Romney's tenure at the helm of the private equity firm Bain Capital. The group, Priorities USA Action, is redoubling its efforts against Romney, re-airing an ad about an AMPAD plant in Marion, Ind. That spot features former employee Mike Earnest recalling being told to build a stage from which officials of the office supply company later announced mass layoffs.

He says, "It was like building my own coffin." That ad first aired in battleground states in the summer.

Romney aides have said AMPAD was a struggling business to begin with, and Bain overall created many more jobs than were lost.

That ad will air in Colorado, Florida, Iowa, Ohio, Nevada, Virginia and Wisconsin. The new campaign will be in addition to a $30 million effort against Romney policy proposals, the group said.

Both Obama and Romney retreated from the campaign trail Saturday to bone up on foreign policy, leaving the work of courting voters to their running mates.

Monday's debate in Boca Raton, Fla., with its focus on international affairs, is the third and final between the two rivals and comes just 15 days before the election.

Obama left Friday for Camp David, the presidential hideaway in Maryland's Catoctin Mountains, where he is huddled with advisers preparing for the debate. Among those with him are White House senior adviser David Plouffe and senior campaign strategist David Axelrod. Aides say Obama was also being assisted by National Security Adviser Tom Donilon and former Obama aide Karen Dunn.

Romney was to spend the weekend in Florida with aides preparing for the debate.

Romney running mate Paul Ryan planned campaign stops in Pennsylvania and Ohio on Saturday. Vice President Joe Biden was headed for St. Augustine, Fla.

Monday's 90-minute debate will be moderated by Bob Schieffer of CBS News. It will be similar to the first debate, with both men standing at lecterns on a stage. Schieffer has listed five subject areas, with more time devoted to the Middle East and terrorism than any other topic.

While the economy has been the dominant theme of the election, foreign policy has attracted renewed media attention in the aftermath of the attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, Libya, that killed four Americans, including U.S. Ambassador Chris Stevens.

Obama had ranked well with the public on his handling of international issues and in fighting terrorism, especially following the death of Osama bin Laden. But the administration's response to the Libya attack and questions over levels of security at the consulate have given Romney and his Republican allies an issue with which to raise doubts about Obama's foreign policy leadership.

Ryan accused Obama of stonewalling, telling Milwaukee radio station WTMJ on Friday that the president was refusing to answer even basic questions. "His response has been inconsistent, it's been misleading," Ryan said.

Obama stuck with domestic policy themes Friday, accusing Romney of moderating his stands and conveniently forgetting his past positions on economic and women's issues and coining a new campaign term for what he described as his opponent's condition: "Romnesia."

Romney has spent large amounts of time off the campaign trail to prepare for the upcoming foreign policy debate. Aides say the additional time preparing is well-spent even if it comes at the expense of public events.

The president planned an extensive tour of battleground states following the debate, with events in Florida and Ohio on Tuesday, including a joint event with Vice President Joe Biden in Dayton, Ohio, before returning to the White House.

On Wednesday, Obama was packing his schedule with around-the-clock campaigning in Davenport, Iowa; Denver; Los Angeles and Las Vegas, followed by events in Tampa, Fla.; Richmond, Va.; Chicago and Cleveland on Thursday. The campaign dubbed it the "America Forward!" tour.

Aides said the president planned to sleep aboard Air Force One from Las Vegas to Tampa on Wednesday night and would call undecided voters from the airplane between stops. In a nod to the campaign's push for early and absentee voting, Obama was voting early in person in his hometown of Chicago on Thursday.

My oh my, look how we change | Mario Ochoa | a mySA.com blog

I came across a statement on Facebook earlier this week that stated, ?Each year I look at the way I was the year before and think, what in the world was I thinking?? It got me wondering how some of us change over days, weeks, months, but most importantly, years. Physically, we all tend to mature but growing mentally is self-evaluated.

When we?re children, we typically rely on our parents for everything. In middle school, we are all still immature and awkward. In high school, we start to look a little better as we slowly but surely emerge out of the physically awkward stage into the socially awkward one.

In-groups and out-groups develop. We go through what we, at fourteen years old, most likely refer to as severe emotional distress from entering and exiting relationships and friendships. There are the ?socially accepted? groups of popular girls and popular guys; the athletes, drama-lovers and musicians. We may get our first job for a little spending money. Then we graduate and likely move on to college where the REAL growing begins.

Now we enter college, where we accept the 4 or more years of hard classes with even harder professors no matter where we attend school. Now, take this with a grain of salt if you will, but this is how I view growing and maturing before stepping out into the real world where we NEVER stop learning from experience over classrooms. Many of the lessons we learn in college serve as training courses for what we must use in the real world.

  • Step out of comfort zones ? Joining on campus groups helps grow socially and professionally. We learn how to deal with people of different cultures, backgrounds, sexes, hobbies and races.
  • Dorm rooms/ apartments ? We learn how to live in conditions with people who may be dirtier/cleaner than we?re use to. We learn how to live with another or, several other people. We fight but learn how to compromise for the sake of our sanity.
  • Stress, on stress, on stress ? that was a musical reference to a rap song for those of you who didn?t know (racks on racks on racks). I thought it was clever. We experience levels of stress beyond what we ever imagined with assignments/projects, studying and exams. Perhaps similar to the stress of work, family obligations and bills that we?ll surely incur after graduation.
  • Momma and daddy don?t hold our hands anymore ? We don?t HAVE to go to class but we learn the responsibility that it?s a very smart idea to go so we get up at the crack of dawn and drag ourselves to the 8 o?clock class we dread.
  • Work ? We realize the importance of needing sleep to get up for work or to study over partying rather quickly. We also learn how to live on a budget because we take advantage of the statement, ?I?m a broke college student.?

All in all, we become a lot stronger than we realize from college, but come across the reality that in 4 years we will be out in the real world trying to find a job. We learn from dealing with other people, maintaining a relationship/friendship, school work and social groups, we learn how to multi-task and better ourselves through rough times and pushing through them. We may learn a few useful things from that communication, math or science class, but we learn much, much more outside of it.

Australia 'misogyny' row prompts dictionary change

CANBERRA, Australia - A fiery speech against sexism by Australia's first woman prime minister has prompted the textbook of Australian English to broaden the definition of "misogyny" to better fit the heated political debate raging downunder.

Prime Minister Julia Gillard last week used a parliamentary debate to launch a strong attack against conservative Opposition Leader Tony Abbott, accusing him of being a misogynist, and her speech has since become an Internet hit.

In response, Australia's Macquarie Dictionary, the authority on the English language in Australia, has decided to broaden the definition of "misogyny" to better match the way the word has been used over the past 30 years.

The dictionary currently defines misogyny as "hatred of women", but will now add a second definition to include "entrenched prejudice against women", suggesting Abbott discriminated against women with his sexist views.

"The language community is using the word in a slightly different way," dictionary editor Sue Butler told Reuters.

In her parliamentary speech, Gillard attacked Abbott, a conservative Catholic, for once suggesting men were better adapted to exercise authority, and for once saying that abortion was "the easy way out". He also stood in front of anti-Gillard protesters with posters saying "ditch the witch".

Abbott has labelled the attack as cheap and personal and part of a government smear campaign against him.

The fallout from Gillard's speech has followed her on an official visit to India, where it was raised during a panel discussion, but she told reporters in New Delhi on Wednesday that she would not give advice on word definitions.

"I have been left in no doubt that a lot of people have clicked on and watched that speech here in India," she said on Wednesday.

"I will leave editing dictionaries to those whose special expertise is language."

But the opposition has ridiculed the dictionary's move, with lawmaker Fiona Nash saying Gillard is the one who needed to be more careful with her words.

Abbott, a super-fit cyclist and swimmer, has been battling perceptions he has a problem with women voters, with his wife and three daughters making public appearances in recent weeks to soften his tough-guy image.
