As we've seen, there will be no shortage of tablet / keyboard hybrids on offer when Windows 8 starts shipping this fall. But since those keyboard docks will typically be sold separately, that means you're also about to see loads of third-party alternatives. Not to be left out, Microsoft just announced a Bluetooth mobile keyboard, along with its smallest-ever mouse -- both of which can be used with any Windows tablet.
Starting with that Wedge Mobile Keyboard, it resembles Zaggmate's iPad case from 2010, in that it has a hard case to make it more travel-resilient. Here, though, the casing is made of flexible rubber, allowing it to double as a tablet stand. Putting it over the keys also turns the keyboard off, allowing you to conserve battery life. On board, you'll also find hotkeys specific to certain Windows 8 features, such as the Charms Bar. And, as the name suggests, the keyboard rises a bit in the back, thanks to the battery door on the other side (this takes two AAA cells, by the way.) One caveat: though you can use it with Windows 7, 8 and RT, and even Mac OS X, but it's not compatible with Vista. Sorry, folks.
In a similar vein, the tiny Wedge Touch Mouse has a matching soft-touch surface and is also Bluetooth-enabled. Like other mice in Microsoft's lineup, it has BlueTrack technology, allowing it to be used on a wide variety of surfaces. The mouse, which runs on a single AA battery, also shuts down whenever you power down whatever device it's paired with. These products will ship "soon," according to Microsoft, with the keyboard retailing for $79.95 and the mouse going for $69.95. For now, we've got a bunch of photos below for your viewing pleasure.
Obesity in type 2 diabetes: Recommendations from guidelines are largely consistentPublic release date: 30-Jul-2012 [ | E-mail | Share ]
Contact: Dr. Anna-Sabine Ernst presse@iqwig.de 49-022-135-6850 Institute for Quality and Efficiency in Health Care
Weight reduction, diet, exercise and behavioral therapy advised / strength of the recommendation varies
On 10th July 2012, the German Institute for Quality and Efficiency in Health Care (IQWiG) published the results of a literature search for evidence-based guidelines for the treatment of obesity in type 2 diabetes. The aim of the report was to identify those recommendations from current guidelines of high methodological quality that may be relevant for a possible new obesity module in the disease management programme (DMP) for type 2 diabetes.
Diet, exercise and behavioural therapy generally advised
IQWiG found that the recommendations of the various guidelines for the treatment of people with type 2 diabetes who are also grossly overweight were more or less consistent: in general, alongside weight reduction, diet, exercise and behavioural therapy were also advised. Above a certain Body Mass Index (BMI), some guidelines also mention drugs to aid weight reduction (BMI ? 27 kg/m) or surgery - for example a gastric bypass (BMI ? 35 kg/m) - as a treatment option. However, the strength of the recommendation, i.e. whether the particular intervention "could", "should" or "must" be used, varies between the individual guidelines. The level of evidence, i.e. the extent to which the recommendations are backed up by results from studies, also differs.
Systematic reviews do not report patient-relevant outcomes
In accordance with the commission received from the Federal Joint Committee (G-BA), the Institute searched for and evaluated systematic reviews, as well as guidelines. The aim was to compare the recommendations of the guidelines with the conclusions of the reviews, i.e. the scientific evidence from studies. However, IQWiG was unable to identify any reviews that were based on the results of studies of high methodological quality and summarized the relevant results for the treatment of people who suffered from both type 2 diabetes and obesity.
Furthermore, the systematic reviews reported largely metabolic parameters, but no patient-relevant outcomes such as blindness or amputation. This means that the conclusions in the guidelines are, for the most part, not supported by evidence from systematic reviews.
Procedure of report production
IQWiG published the preliminary results in the form of the preliminary report in October 2011 and interested parties were invited to submit comments. When the commenting procedure ended, the preliminary report was revised and sent as a final report to the contracting agency, the Federal Joint Committee, in May 2012. The written comments are published in a separate document at the same time as the final report. The report was produced in collaboration with external experts.

MOSCOW (AP) ? Three Russian feminist rockers rejected charges of hooliganism for performing a "punk prayer" in Moscow's main cathedral against Vladimir Putin's return as president as a trial against them opened in earnest on Monday. The charges could carry a punishment of up to seven years in prison.
The three members of the Pussy Riot band ? Nadezhda Tolokonnikova, 23, Maria Alekhina, 24, and Yekaterina Samutsevich, 29 ? have been in custody for five months since their February stunt. Their prosecution has caused a sharp public divide and drawn protests from rights groups who have declared them prisoners of conscience.
The trial began July 20 but the first sessions were devoted to procedural issues. On Monday, with the court turning to the substance of the case, Tolokonnikova and other defendants said in statements read by their lawyer that their goal was to express their resentment over Russian Orthodox Church Patriarch Kirill's support for Putin's rule.
They pleaded not guilty to the official charges of hooliganism driven by "religious hatred." Tolokonnikova said she felt sorry if some of the believers felt insulted by their act, but that they didn't mean to offend anyone. It wasn't clear how long the trial might last, but a court has recently ruled that the women should be kept in custody for another half-year. Two other participants in the performance haven't been identified and remain at large.
Here is a look at what the women did and background on the case:
THE "PUNK PRAYER"
Two weeks before March's presidential election five women dressed in brightly colored miniskirts and balaclavas ? masks that cover their faces entirely and leave only the eyes uncovered ? and took over the church's pulpit for less than a minute. They high-kicked and danced around while singing a song pleading "Virgin Mary, drive Putin away!" that also contained diatribes against the top Orthodox clergy. They bowed and blessed themselves as security guards arrived to take them out. The performance was videotaped and immediately became an Internet hit. The act followed a series of other recent performances by the group, including one from atop a bus and another one from a jail roof. Shortly before their church stunt, they became an Internet sensation for a song titled "Putin Chickens Out" from a spot on Red Square used in czarist Russia for announcing government decrees.
THE CHURCH
The Christ the Savior Cathedral, Moscow's main orthodox cathedral, was consecrated in 1883 to mark the Russian victory over Napoleon. It was blown up in 1931 as part of Soviet dictator Josef Stalin's anti-church campaign, and a plan called for building a giant Palace of Soviets in its place, complete with Stalin's statue perched on top. That plan was delayed by swampy ground at the site and then abandoned for good when World War II began. The site was turned instead into a sprawling outdoor swimming pool. After the Soviet collapse, the towering church was rebuilt with the help of public donations and was consecrated in 2000. It has since served as Moscow's main Orthodox cathedral, becoming a symbol of the restoration of the Orthodox Church's power.
THE RUSSIAN ORTHODOX CHURCH'S RESPONSE
Patriarch Kirill has condemned the rockers' act as "blasphemous" and denounced those believers who called for the church to forgive them. His stance reflects the church's growing clout and has raised concerns about its close connections to the government and its growing influence over decision-making.
PUBLIC DIVIDE
Russia's leading liberal politicians and some of the nation's most prominent cultural figures have strongly protested the trial and criticized the church for supporting the criminal case instead of showing clemency. Amnesty International has called the three women prisoners of conscience. At the same time, some Orthodox groups and many believers are urging strong punishment for an action they consider sacrilegious. A poll conducted in Moscow earlier this month found that half of respondents oppose the trial while 36 percent support it. The rest were undecided.
THE KREMLIN'S STANCE
Putin has avoided comment on the case, but many commentators believe that he has given his blessing to the prosecution of the three rockers as part of a crackdown on dissent following unprecedented protests in Moscow against his 12-year rule. Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev said that it's up to the court to issue a verdict, but noted that some nations have even tougher punishment for that kind of action.
facebook status quotes Searching for the most effective along with most inexpensive health insurance online quotes nowadays is usually easily accomplished, contrary to those days finding one you need to check into your directory web pages or even view the promotions along with calling them to ask about the prices. The online world allows easy access to this, which happens to be quite different from those days in places you have to abandon your house making stop by to them on an quick justification on what the schemes will work. Paying off the payments for these kind of insurance coverages will be manufactured after getting the most effective along with proper overall health package deal for your needs.
Health care insurance from the You.S. When compared to Other International locations
facebook status quotes In the united states, medical insurance policies program works differently using their company countries specifically those throughout Europe. Even though this could possibly be typical just as various other distinctions along with plans, national politics, or merely with regards to all, but also in the united states you cannot find any authorities insurance policies structure which will guarantee the minimum typical with overall health products and services towards inhabitants. Men and women will only acquire health insurance out of individual insurance firms made available by means of the companies. They should only receive health insurance online quotes with the insurance firms by means of the businesses.
Although in the usa there are already a few developments from the insurance policies schemes wanted to the inhabitants nevertheless the larger many inhabitants can get the insurance coverages by means of the businesses. This is an benifit of companies simply because could make a deal while using insurance firms and acquire beneficial possibilities of getting insurance quotes which can be cheaper than individuals made available already in the market. They are able to then pass on the cheaper costs thus to their workforce. This is often an benifit of individuals currently employed except for those who are with no work, sometimes it is major matter. For the people currently employed they?ll benefit from the far better positive aspects.

facebook status quotes The business structured insurance quotes gives beneficial insurance plan thus to their workforce yet this will furthermore certainly be a disadvantage to those who are underemployed or even those that displaced the work opportunities due to closures. Even though the underemployed men and women can continue to have probabilities to acquire insurance quotes with the same firm, the payments is usually larger. While they can nevertheless be capable of getting the higher insurance plan, but it surely also can consist of larger costs. If you are one of these simple underemployed men and women start along with searching out the big insurance agencies and you may get a bargain.
White House economists on Friday predicted that unemployment will fall only slightly by the end of the year, amid modest economic growth and a dangerously high budget deficit.
The Office of Management and Budget showed little in the way of optimism about the state of the world's largest economy, forecasting unemployment of 7.9 percent by year-end, compared with 8.2 percent today.
The White House unit also predicted that 2012 growth would come in around 2.6 percent, not fast enough to bring down painfully high levels of joblessness, which remain the biggest obstacle to a solid recovery and President Barack Obama's chances of re-election in November.
The 2012 budget deficit is expected to reach $1.21 trillion, around $116 billion less than first expected, but still astronomically high, at 7.8 percent of gross domestic product.
Amid rolling crises spilling over from Europe and twitchy consumers and investors at home, the US economy has struggled for four years to recover from the "Great Recession."
Earlier estimates had expected growth of around 2.7 percent this year, with unemployment of 8.9 percent.
Obama's allies in Congress seized on the latest figures as evidence of the need for Republicans to accept the president's plans to juice the economy.
"There is much more work to be done to bolster our recovery," said Congressman Chris Van Hollen. "It is more important than ever to pass the president's jobs package, which has been sitting before the House of Representatives since September."
Republican oppose the plan because it would raise taxes on those earning over $200,000 a year.
Claudio Milano is an avant-garde vocalist and conceptualist who tries to bring together different arts such as music, visuals, stage, etc. He is one of the few artists today who is trying to do something new with his different projects (the NichelOdeon release from 2010 probably being his most well known work to date). He uses his voice as an instrument and recites the words (of his own or others) in a peculiar yet musical way.
On Adython, he collaborates with Belgian artist Erna Frassens who wrote the words here (sung in
Italian) and came up with the overall concept. Stefano Ferrian plays tenor saxophone while Attila
Faravelli and Alfonso Santimone use computers and electronics to come up with weird, constantly
changing background sounds. Ultimately the effect is that of improvised avant-garde electronic music
with improvised singing and saxophone playing.
Claudio is equally at home in avant-rock, avant-jazz or any other avant-whatever. His musical and in
general artistic vision knows no boundaries. Adython is an album that would appeal to those who
enjoy improvisational music. Although he is now listed here under 'prog electronic' this is the most
electronic thing I have heard from him; some of his other music and projects can be closer to
(avant) classical or (avant) jazz. I don't speak Italian but the way the vocals are used to recite
the lyrics makes it seem that it doesn't matter what is being said to begin with; it's all in the
delivery.
There are only two tracks on this album. To me the over 32 minute title track is the stronger of the
two. Overall the whole album has a sound and feel of its own. I congratulate Claudio on this fine
release and it is nice to know that there are still those artists who wish to push the envelope even
if they know that not many will pay attention. This is music that is 'beyond prog' if you will,
challenging and innovative yet may appeal to the more adventurous prog fan. I'll give this a 3.5
rounded up to 4 stars.

DENVER (AP) ? The former graduate student accused in the deadly Colorado movie theater shooting was being treated by a psychiatrist at the university where he studied, the first indication that he may have sought help before the rampage that killed 12 people and wounded 58.
Attorneys for James Holmes, 24, made the disclosure in a court motion Friday as they sought to discover the source of leaks to some media outlets that he sent the psychiatrist a package containing a notebook with descriptions of an attack.
The motion said the leaks jeopardized Holmes' right to a fair trial and violated a judge's gag order.
Holmes' lawyers added that the package contained communications between Holmes and his psychiatrist that should be shielded from public view. The document describes Holmes as a "psychiatric patient" of Dr. Lynne Fenton.
The motion did not reveal when Holmes began seeing Fenton or whether he was being treated for a mental illness. Legal analysts expect Holmes' attorneys to use an insanity defense at trial. Holmes is scheduled to be arraigned Monday. A hearing on the new defense motion also is scheduled that day.
Calls to Holmes' lawyer and the state public defender's office were not immediately returned, nor was a message left with Fenton's office. A spokeswoman for the Arapahoe County prosecutor's office declined comment.
The University of Colorado's website identified Fenton as the medical director of the school's Student Mental Health Services. An online resume stated that she sees 10 to 15 graduate students a week for medication and psychotherapy, as well as 5 to 10 patients in her general practice as a psychiatrist. Schizophrenia was listed as one of her research interests.
Fenton was disciplined by the Colorado Medical Board in 2004 for prescribing herself Xanax while her mother was dying, state records show. She also was disciplined for prescribing the sleep aid Ambien and the allergy medicine Claritin for her husband, and painkillers for an employee who suffered from chronic headaches.
Fenton worked for the U.S. Air Force in Texas as an acupuncturist before joining the University of Colorado in 2005.
A 1998 Denver Post article quotes a Colorado acupuncturist named Lynne Fenton discussing how acupuncture could be used to enhance women's busts.
In the week since the July 20 attack at an Aurora movie theater, few details have emerged about Holmes' life ? especially the year he spent as a graduate student in Colorado. Holmes enrolled in a doctoral program in neuroscience at the University of Colorado-Denver Anschutz medical campus in June 2011. He left without explanation in June.
University officials have refused to disclose much more about Holmes, citing an order from the judge barring them from releasing information that would "impede an ongoing investigation." Staff, professors and classmates have been mum about Holmes' life at the school.
Holmes' appearance at his first court hearing on Monday stunned the victims' families and fueled speculation about the state of his mental health. His hair dyed a shocking comic-book shade of orange-red, he looked sleepy and, at times, inattentive.
Prosecutors said they didn't know if he was being medicated. Friday's defense motion, however, was the first confirmation from the defense that Holmes was seeing a psychiatrist and that he had sent a package to the doctor.
The package was seized by authorities on Monday after it was discovered in the mailroom at the university. It's unclear if it was sent before the attack at the July 20 midnight showing of "The Dark Knight Rises" that left 12 dead and dozens of others injured.
Authorities said Holmes legally purchased four guns before the attack at Denver-area sporting goods stores ? a semiautomatic rifle, a shotgun and two pistols. To buy the guns, Holmes had to pass background checks that can take as little as 20 minutes in Colorado.
Federal law bars from purchasing firearms people who have been found mentally defective by a judge or who have been committed to a mental health institution, said Benjamin Van Houten of the Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence.
States can impose additional restrictions, but Colorado does not.
"That is why it's important for states to look at going beyond federal law in this area," Van Houten said.
At a press conference earlier this week, university officials acknowledged that students in the neuroscience program are carefully monitored. They said a graduate student experiencing problems would normally be referred to student support services.
On Friday, 21 news organizations, including The Associated Press, filed a motion asking the judge to reverse his order sealing court records in the case. The news organizations claimed the order means even a complete list of court filings is kept secret.
District Court Judge William Blair Sylvester has ordered all motions by prosecutors and the defense be filed under seal so they cannot be inspected by the public. Sylvester also ordered the university not to release records on Holmes.
The news organizations include The Denver Post, three other newspapers, four Denver television stations, six broadcast networks and two newspaper groups.
A spokeswoman for the district attorney's office declined to comment. Holmes' attorneys didn't immediately return a call.
Meanwhile, authorities also are investigating whether Holmes practiced shooting in the remote mountains northwest of Denver.
The owner of C&M Guns in the town of Hot Sulphur Springs said local authorities, as well as agents with the FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, have asked him whether Holmes came into his shop, which is near a public shooting range. Clark Branstetter said he didn't remember seeing Holmes.
KUSA-TV in Denver first reported the visit to that shop and another unnamed one in the area.
The public shooting range is owned by the Colorado Division of Wildlife. A spokesman wouldn't comment on whether Holmes used the range. The range isn't staffed and no records are kept of who uses it.
In late June, Holmes tried to join a private gun range east of Aurora but he never showed up.

ROME (Reuters) - Terence Malick's "To the Wonder" starring Ben Affleck and Rachel Weisz and Brian De Palma's "Passion" with Rachel McAdams and Noomi Rapace are among the films in competition at this year's Venice Film Festival, organizers said on Thursday.
A slimmed-down lineup of 18 films will be competing for the Golden Lion award at the 69th edition of the world's oldest film festival, which runs from August 29 to Sept 8.
Malick, winner of the Cannes film festival's Golden Palm award for his epic "The Tree of Life" in 2011, brings a romantic story of refound love to the Lido, while veteran U.S. director De Palma's "Passion" is a murderous tale of revenge.
Other films in the Competition section include Harmony Korine's "Spring Breakers" starring James Franco, Selena Gomez and Vanessa Hudgens, Ramin Bahrani's "At Any Price" with Zac Efron and Dennis Quaid and Takeshi Kitano's latest offer "Outrage Beyond".
Only 17 films were announced at a news conference in Rome on Friday but the 18th entrant will be announced later.
Artistic director Alberto Barbera promised a "more sober, less glitzy" event for the 69th edition. "I had promised to reduce the number of films and I've kept that promise, more or less, apart from a few small exceptions," he said.
Mira Nair's thriller "The Reluctant Fundamentalist", about the conflict of loyalties facing a young Pakistani man working on Wall Street, will open the festival.
Spike Lee's "Bad 25", a documentary about the late Michael Jackson and Robert Redford's "The Company You Keep", with Julie Christie, are among films showing outside the main competition.
LONDON (AP) ? Pharmaceutical maker AstraZeneca PLC says its net profit fell by 24 percent in the second quarter compared to a year ago as the company lost exclusivity on some of its leading products.
AstraZeneca said Thursday that its net profit for the period was $1.6 billion, down from $2.1 billion a year earlier. Revenue was down 21 percent to $6.66 billion.
The company said the loss of exclusivity accounted for 15 percentage points of the revenue drop. In the United States, the loss of exclusivity on Seroquel IR for bipolar disorder accounted for 80 percent of the fall in revenue.
AstraZeneca shares were down 1.3 percent at 2,871 pence in morning trading in London.
CENTENNIAL, Colo. (AP) ? James Holmes spent a year in a small neuroscience doctoral program, surrounded by scientists and roughly three dozen classmates delving into the inner workings of the brain.
The University of Colorado, Denver, isn't saying if they had any warning signs.
Experts say, however, the intimacy of the program and its focus on the brain may not have been enough for staff and students to detect that Holmes was on a course that police say ended with a deadly rampage at a midnight showing of the new Batman movie.
Supported by a prestigious federal grant, Holmes, 24, was in the first year of a program at the Anschutz Medical Campus dedicated to neuroscience, studying such topics as how the brain works or malfunctions or helping develop drugs to treat epilepsy and other disorders.
But it is not behavioral science or psychology, experts say.
David Eagleman, who runs the Initiative on Neuroscience and the Law at Baylor University, said some neuroscientists are experts in mental illnesses and aberrant behavior, but others spend most of their time studying molecular chemistry.
"It's really only a fraction of professors" who could identify a simmering mental disorder, Eagleman said. "Many people in neuroscience are not specialized in the issue of picking up mental illness ... There are plenty of people who just study mice and cats and stuff like that."
Holmes is accused of methodically stockpiling weapons and explosives at work and at home that police say he used to kill 12 people and wound 58 more at a movie theater Friday in nearby Aurora. Police say he also booby-trapped his apartment with the intent to kill police officers.
Holmes' arraignment hearing is on Monday.
Authorities say Holmes began shopping for firearms while studying neuroscience. He joined the program in June 2011 after receiving a National Institutes of Health grant to cover his tuition and provide a $26,000 annual living allowance.
The school refuses to say what specifically Holmes studied. But an online syllabus listed him as making a presentation in May during a class called "Biological Basis of Psychiatric and Neurological Disorders."
In early June, Holmes took a standard oral exam that ends a graduate student's first year. The school will not say whether he passed, but Holmes filed paperwork to withdraw from the program just days later. He never provided a written explanation for his departure.
"He had, as is now common knowledge, excellent academic credentials," said Barry Shur, dean of the university's graduate program.
Shur said the graduate program is "like a family" in which faculty carefully monitor students' progress.
"It would be a logical step to assume there were people in that program who worked closely with him and would have the expertise to assess his behavior," said Mary Ellen O'Toole, a former FBI profiler and the author of the book "Dangerous Instincts: How Gut Feelings Betray Us."
"But being able to recognize concerning, troubling behavior does not mean you can prevent a mass homicide," O'Toole said. "There are many people at a university level who act quirky and strange and don't go out and commit mass murder."
Academics studying the human brain may not have the same ability to size up threats as someone who makes his living spending time with people firing guns, O'Toole said.
Glenn Rotkovich, owner of a private Colorado gun range outside Denver, quickly concluded there was something wrong with Holmes.
Holmes applied to join the range in late June. But Rotkovich said that after calling Holmes back and hearing a "bizarre" voice mail message ? spoken in a strange, low-pitched voice with heavy breathing ? he concluded he didn't want Holmes as a member.
"I flagged him to people and said, if he shows up, I don't trust him," Rotkovich said.
Holmes apparently never went to the range.
The university's silence on the year Holmes spent there contributed to the mystery surrounding his motivations. Administrators refuse to say whether faculty or students saw signs of dangerous behavior in Holmes. Campus police said they had no information on Holmes before the attack.
Holmes remained in solitary confinement Tuesday in Arapahoe County jail, a day after appearing bleary-eyed and disoriented in his initial court appearance. He could face the death penalty if convicted.
Working to build their case, a team of lawyers from the district attorney's office spent about 90 minutes inside the movie multiplex where the shooting occurred. Crews were starting to encircle the building with a chain link fence while people continued to flock to a memorial nearby for the victims.
Relatives of those who died turned to the grim task of preparing for funerals. A woman whose husband remains in a coma after being shot in the head gave birth to a healthy baby boy in the same hospital Tuesday.
Meanwhile, new details emerged about the night of the shooting.
Clad in head-to-toe combat gear, Holmes allegedly burst into a midnight screening of "The Dark Night Rises," tossed gas canisters into the crowd and opened fire. Friends Stephanie Davies and Allie Young, who attended, said the gunman moved around the room yelling and seemingly targeting people.
"He would shout, 'What are you doing? I said stand up!' And he would pick people up. I saw him stand over someone. I just see hair and him holding the shirt and 'boom,'" said Davies, 21.
Outside Colorado, men accused of making threats during or after other screenings of the Batman film have been arrested in separate incidents in Maine, Arizona and Southern California, underscoring moviegoers' anxieties about security.
In Colorado, the shooting has prompted a sudden surge in gun sales.
In three days, the Colorado Bureau of Investigation approved background checks for 2,887 people who wanted to purchase a firearm. That was 25 percent greater than the average Friday-to-Sunday period in 2012, and 43 percent greater than the same period the week prior.
In Arizona, Jeff Serdy, owner of A.J.I. Sporting Goods in Apache Junction, estimated he saw up to 40 percent more traffic than usual in the two days after the killings.
"I looked out on the floor and said to myself, 'Whoa, look at all these people,'" Serdy said, noting many customers expressed concern that lawmakers may use the shooting to try to pass gun restrictions. Political analysts say there is little appetite in Congress for such laws.

Feces fossils lend new insights into connection between Native-Americans, diabetesPublic release date: 24-Jul-2012 [ | E-mail | Share ]
Contact: Karl Reinhard kreinhard1@me.com 402-875-2863 University of Nebraska-Lincoln
Research hints that fat-hoarding genes developed from the nature of ancient feasts
Why do Native Americans experience high rates of diabetes? A common theory is that they possess fat-hoarding "thrifty genes" left over from their ancestors genes that were required for survival during ancient cycles of feast and famine, but that now contribute to the disease in a modern world of more fatty and sugary diets.
A newly published analysis of fossilized feces from the American Southwest, however, suggests this "thrifty gene" may not have developed because of how often ancient Natives ate. Instead, researchers said, the connection may have come from precisely what they ate.
The research, which appears in the latest edition of the journal Current Anthropology, suggests that the prehistoric hunter-gatherer civilizations of the Southwest lived on a diet very high in fiber, very low in fat and dominated by foods extremely low on the glycemic index, a measure of effects food has on blood sugar levels. This diet, researchers said, could have been sufficient to give rise to the fat-storing "thrifty genes."
"What we're saying is we don't really need to look to feast or famine as a basis for (the genes)," said Karl Reinhard, professor of forensic sciences at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln's School of Natural Resources and the study's lead author. "The feast-or-famine scenario long hypothesized to be the pressure for 'thrifty genes' isn't necessary, given the dietary evidence we've found."
Natives have some of the highest rates of Type 2 diabetes of any group and are more than twice as likely to develop the disease as are Caucasians. The notion the gene's origin goes back to feast-and-famine cycles among prehistoric hunter-gatherer ancestors has been discussed for nearly a half-century.
To fully understand the basis of the high rates, Reinhard said, "one has to look at the best dietary data one can find. That comes from coprolites (the official term for fossilized feces). By looking at coprolites, we're seeing exactly what people ate."
The coprolites are from Antelope Cave, a deep cavern in northern Arizona where, over several thousands of years, was home to various cultures. That includes the Ancestral Pueblan peoples, who are believed to have lived there seasonally for at least 450 years.
Reinhard and Keith Johnson, an archeologist at California State University, Chico, studied 20 coprolites found in the cave and combined it with analysis from other sites for hints of ancient Natives' diets. They found clues to a food regimen dominated by maize and high-fiber seed from sunflowers, wild grasses, pigweed and amaranth.
Prickly pear, a desert succulent, was also found repeatedly in the samples.
By volume, about three-quarters of the Antelope Cave coprolites were made up of insoluble fiber. The foods also were low on the glycemic index; some research suggests that high-GI foods may increase risk of obesity and diabetes.
The analysts' findings led them to deduce that the nature of the feast, and not necessarily its frequency, was enough to lock the "thrifty" genes in place and leave modern Natives more susceptible to diabetes as their diets evolved to lower-fiber, higher-GI foods.
"These were not just famine foods," the authors wrote. "These were the foods eaten on a day-by-day basis during all seasons in both feast and famine. They continued to be eaten even after agriculture was developed. Antelope Cave coprolites show that this high-fiber diet was eaten during the warmer seasons of food abundance."
In addition to UNL's Reinhard and California State Chico's Johnson, the study was authored by Isabel Teixeira-Santos and Monica Viera of the Escola Nacional de Saude Publica in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Do you know what?s happening in your own site searchc Understanding site search is one of the most important KPI (Key Performance Indicator) you should measure. According to a Forrester study, over 50 percent of major web sites fail in search usability. When your search fails to deliver, your conversion suffers. A low converting site will result is less sales and decreased revenue. Search is not just another nice feature to have. You have to think of search as a revenue generating part of your business.
Your company works hard to drive traffic to your site. Many visitors will use your on site search instead of browsing through your site. Online shoppers want to use site search to expedite the shopping experience. The faster and easier they can locate the product they are looking for the more likely they?ll buy on your site. The more roadblock you set in place to inconvenience the shopper, the more likely they?ll buy from someone else.
Do you know what they are searching for. Are you in any way measuring what search phrases are queried on your sitec It is not enough to have site search as a feature. You must analyze it. You have to understand it. Then, you have to make adjustments based on your findings.
The best place to start learning about your site search is through the search log files. If you don?t monitor your log files, you will fail to gain an insight into what your customers are looking for on your site. Understanding site search is a KPI that should be part of your tactical operations. Learning about site search will tell you what your customers are looking for.
In addition to understanding what site visitors are searching for, you have to test what results yield from searches. For example, if your customers are searching for ?return policy? what results are they shownc?
Are the search results relevant to the search queriesc If the result you get is not the best possible result, you have to tweak you search engine. The top few results must be relevant, because searchers are not interested in reading deep down your search results. Result number 10 is infinitely more irrelevant than result number 1.
Every reasonable search phrase should result in relevant search results. For example, if the site searcher types ?return policy? in the search field, the search should result in some result. Every e-commerce site should have a return policy; therefore, the site search should yield the relevant result. One of the worst possible outcomes for a search query would be no result. If a user types any relevant key phrase, it should result in relevant results. If they don?t, your search is failing your customers.
Site search is a tool to enhance customer satisfaction. If it works as it is supposed to, it has done its job. If site search fails it becomes a frustrating experience instead of a positive experience resulting in lower conversion rates, lost sales opportunities, loss of revenue and unhappy site visitors.

QUESTION: Which online business idea should I pick? Over the summer, I want to start an online business/company. I have some coding knowledge and I have a few ideas for the business. Some of the ideas are informational sites, and most are user interactive websites. My goal is to eventually make six or more figures a year. I love all of my ideas, but I'm not sure which to choose. 1. A website where users can submit original songs and other users can listen, rate, comment, share, and chat with other users. Useers can also create a profile page and place info on the page. Revenue: selling ad space, possibly creating a pro membership. How will it be made: php script from jam room. Pros- bands need an organized way of promoting themselves. Cons- purevolume.com already exists. 2. This would be a service. It would be online concierge or your own online butler. For people who don't have time to schedule stuff, they would pay a monthly fee and a person would complete the action for you whenever you want except. Your butler serves you from 8 am to 10pm. I would start off by myself when the business gets started, and then will hire more people as the business grows. Revenue: monthly fees Pros: this could be a big hit and many busy executives would need this. Cons- man labor may make this almost impossible if a lot people use this. 3. A debate website where users could create a debate, and other users could post comments and argue on why they think they agree with the statement, or disagree. Based on them saying they agree or not, thee comment will be placed under an agree column or disagree. Revenue: selling ad space How it will be made: script from prescripts. Pros-there is no site that does this, and people love to express their opinion on topics. Cons- no affiliate products to sell. 4. A website where people can list their gift cards for sale, trade,or auction and other people can buy the cards for an under worth price. So let's say someone has an unwanted card to target for 5. They recieved it as a gift so they did not pay anything for it. They could easily sell the 125 card for 0 . A person wants the card, so they buy it for 0 . I take a 4% fee and the seller gets for a card he never wanted. Revenue: selling ad space, charging small fee How it will be made: marketplace script Pros- cool site idea Cons- lots of co,petition and established sites. 5. A website that has reviews, videos, articles on cell phones. I would have tons of content to bring in traffic. I would join verizon AT&T and sprints affiliate programs and sell their phones on my site. Revenue: affiliate marketing, selling ad space. How it is made- site builder Pros- could bring in tons of revenue Cons- competition cent, phone dog, phone arena, mobiledia, and it is not a user interactive website. 6. A website where people can sell, trade, auction, and buy websites. The person could post a snapshot, price, and info on the wewbsite, and anyone who wants it could buy it. I would take a small 4% fee. Revenue: small fee, selling ad space How it's made- script Pros- good idea Cons- lots of competition Those are my ideas. Which do you think is more profitable? Which should I do? Which could eventually make me six or more figures a year? Even if you don't think any are good, which would you choose if you had to? Thanks!
ANSWER: Picking an online business is really a good idea. The best form of online business i think you should go for is affiliate programs where you just have to view ads and get paid for it with just five to ten minutes of your time. No special knowledge required. Such a wonderful source of extra income. here is a list of genuine affiliate sites that you can sign up for through the links below. you will need an online account and once you sign up, you will be given instructions on what to do. QUESTION: Is there any Internet Marketing guru who would be happy if I promoted his successful internet money maker? QUESTION: starting my own online business, need some pointers? i am going to start my own online business(like everyone else out there! lol). i would like to sell my homemade natural soaps and bath products, as well as cloth baby wipes, menstrual pads, and anything else i fancy. should i buy my own website and sell items that way, or sell them on ebay or hyena cart? i like the idea of having my own website to myself, but it costs about a month...at first i might lose money, but if i keep up with promoting and build a good customer base, i'm sure it will pay off. should i maybe start with a hyena cart type account at first and see how well i do before venturing entirely on my own? the purpose of my business would be of course, profit, but also because i love doing my hobby and want to share it with others. please give me your input! thank you. :-)
ANSWER: Hi. It is a fair idea. If I were you, I would first try to spend a week or more browsing through topics on strating your own business and the like at this US Gov web site http://www.sba.gov It should give your idea a better form and will trigger some thought process as to whether you are ready to venture into that. I will refrain from comments on hyena carts, e-bays and the like as these are just conduits or, if you wish, technicalities to conducting operations. The major challenge with the online business is getting noticed. Hope you will find some decent answers at the web site I have recommended. Good luck
QUESTION: Online Clothing Store? New Business? I am extremely passionate about starting an online vintage store that sells clothes and one of a kind items. I would like to ask a few questions so I can get a good grasp on a few things before I write my business plan. * QUESTIONS * 1. If I were to open a business online, selling clothes, how would I have someone make my clothes for me? Do other companies have relationships with China/Japan? How does this work. An Example would be good. 2. Good marketing/promoting ideas? 3. Labelling your clothes. 4. Is it illegal to use previously owned clothing items and re-branding them to your logo? Any other tips and advice (positive outlook only please, or negative with good intentions) I am extremely passionate & driven, I just thought I could use a little extra help, who couldn't, right? Thank you.
ANSWER: 1) You need to find someone local first to make up a few of your designs before sending them overseas for reproduction, which is not only VERY expensive to do, as you have to do mass quantities. Not to mention, overseas companies are notorious for ripping off your design. 2) Get a catchy logo and take good photos of your clothes. Easy to read and easy to navigate websites are the best. Once you have a clothing line together, start contacting local media to let them know you are launching your new company and designs. 3) You need to have labels made with the washing instructions, fiber content, and your logo. This is something you do last. Do an internet search under 'custom clothing labels' and you will find several companies. 4) Yes. Extremely illegal. Imagine how you would feel if someone put their label into your designs. If you do it, you will get sued and your name will be MUD in the industry.
QUESTION: How is propaganda used in business today? How does one acquire so much positive media attention, even if unmerited? I am very curious, from a business perspective, how a company that so many do not like manages to receive so many gleaming reviews from big name businesses that consumers respect? I have been thinking about this for a while but located the perfect example of what I am attempting to ask while researching the validity of paying for "Angie's List", and online service provider who advertises that they accumulate customer reviews to help consumers locate reputable service providers in their area. Obviously much of their advertisement is paid for, but when PC World, msnbc, U.S.News, Good Morning America, and the New York Times say something is great, folks have a tendency to believe this. What's confusing is that Angies List is not considered great by most users. For instance the online comments left by users after the gleaming New York Times article, http://bucks.blogs.nytimes.com/2012/03/02/your-reviews-of-angies-list/# reveals that many who have tried A. List find it to be greatly lacking in many ways, varying from the lack of customer support & refund options to the lack of useful and accurate information. Many seem to consider it nothing more than a way for customers to "vent" after receiving shoddy work. Many recommend that the site be avoided and that for reliable intelligence regarding local businesses one should "Stick with a recommendations from a friend or neighbor." The general consensus seems to be that A. List is a waste of money (I have not joined. The requirement to enter personal information before being told the amount needing to be paid, and the fact that I could not locate the membership fee even in the FAQ's section, made me wonder if this wasn't some kind of scam, so I started looking into it). My questions is... How does a business which is, according to the many unhappy humans who have actually signed up and used it (their opinions are often difficult to locate, being buried in the search results under the great reviews and the many, many ads), manage to basically utilize propaganda to present themselves to the world in a way that is not entirely truthful... or reflect how past users feel about their usefulness and trustworthiness? It's quite ironic really that A. List is a "service" whose purpose is to point out which service providers are to be trusted and which are not. It does make one wonder just how reliable the information they provide is (is it swayed in some way?) considering that their own service is not being portrayed in a way that reflects true user opinion. I hope someone answers this. I am genuinely interested in how an online service provider, or any business for that matter, manages to acquire so many gleaming reviews from the "Big Guns" when in actuality their business is less than well-received from consumers. In a nutshell: How does one utilize propaganda to promote a business, online or brick and mortar, in the world today?
QUESTION: What business idea should I pick? Thanks!
ANSWER: How many times a month do you ask this question? I have seen it at least 4 or 5 times. None of your ideas are all that great if you want to make 6 figures. All of them face stiff competition from established and reputable sites such as eBay and Craigslist. Unless you can come up with some really novel way of doing this better than the established sites, you would be better off going and rethinking your ideas. If you want to make money online then you need a unique idea. If you don't have a unique idea (which you don't) then you better have a really unique way of doing things that people will just love.

ANSWER: You will see which one has more profit via running the figure and do project feasibility analysis which one provide the most NPV, IRR and other benefits in many terms that you consider already. But the thing is you think a lot of idea by yourself... it is so great. But it would not be valuable if you do nothing about it. If you do, whether is is not successful, you will learn something from it. If you are successful with it, you will gain a lot of money..:-) Good luck :-)

ANSWER: I really like your second idea, cleaning/handyman service etc... all in one which you can organised online is a brilliant idea. You could have contracts with companies at first until you are confident to hire your own staff.

QUESTION: To people with online t-shirt businesses? just wondering about the online tshirt industry... i just noticed theres a lot of online tshirt companies that just print their own slogans and stuff...just wanted to hear about some of your experiences with doing it, how you promote your site and about how much you make on average a month. Just curious...not looking to get into the t-shirt market or anything but I just wanted to know how you compete in what seems like such a saturated market.
ANSWER: I assume you found and read the May 2005 wall street journal article (in the sources). Unfortunely they point at the successes and not the failures, From talking to people in the business the impression I got was that 1. most may have a positive cash flow, but are not making enough to pay off their investment of time and effort that goes into development, marketing, sales, and other business operations. 2. They do not make a living wage from their work, 3. At least one found t-shirts with their design selling at a discount below the cost that she was paying for them. She found out that the printer had a bad run and sold these as seconds. The designer was concerned both because her signature logo was on these poor quality t-shirts and because people were buying the cheaper shirts instead of the one's she was selling. 4. the more successful sellers seem to have "lucked out" in the sense they are depend on a single theme and were not in the business of sell t-shirts but decided to sell shirts as a side business. Soon the side line was doing more business than their main line. Still, I have to say based on the people I know who tried to start in the business, was frankly the reason they failed was they did not have a design that I would want to wear..

How much money do you make in your first month with them? is there such a service online? if so who are they?what's their prices like? Do they do it for a year or longer?
ANSWER: If you want the whole thing -- traffic, orders and business -- then you need to think of two things: (a) Getting TARGETED traffic to your site (no "100,000 hits for .99 trafficswarm methods") and (b) Improving your site to CONVERT these visitors to buyers. Getting traffic is a combination of a lot of things. The key to success is to create great content that visitors want to use, search engines will love and other websites will naturally link to. Of course, it's easier said than done. You can use pay per click advertising in the search engines to reach audiences looking for your products. You can use Google Adwords http://www.google.com/adwords or Yahoo http://searchmarketing.yahoo.com Here are some shoestring marketing ideas that can help you get the visitors you need at the least cost possible: 1. Create the best content you can with the best products you can possibly offer. Your content is your best advertisement - if visitors love your content, then they will go back and spread the word to others. 2. Make it easy for users to recommend your site. Viral marketing is very important -- and easy to tap on the Web. But give your users the tools. Get a Recommend this Site script from websites such as cgiscripts.com and similar directories of scripts. Some even go as far as giving incentives to those who recommend the site to their friends. If only 10 people go to your site, but these 10 people invite 10 more - that's additional traffic that you get for FREE! Recommend Site Scripts (various) http://php.resourceindex.com/Complete_Scripts/Website_Promotion/Recommend_Site/ Big Nose Bird Recommend this Site http://bignosebird.com/carchive/birdcast.shtml CGI Resource Index http://cgi.resourceindex.com/Programs_and_Scripts/Perl/Website_Promotion/Recommend_Site/ Hostscripts http://www.hotscripts.com/PHP/Scripts_and_Programs/Site_Recommendation/index.html 3. Rank well in the search engines (organic search results, not the pay per click). SEs can be a big source of traffic. The key is to create the best content in your niche. If you have good content, other websites will gladly link to you and offer your site as a resource to their audience. Check the on-page factors and be sure to get linked from authority sites in your topic area. If you are going to read only one piece on search engine optimization, I suggest you read Brett Tabke of WebmasterWorld.com's "Successful Site in 12 Months with Google Alone: 26 steps to 15k a day." http://www.webmasterworld.com/forum3/2010.htm 4. Send out press releases. While outfits charge as much as 0 per release, there are free press release submission places on the Web. Press releases allow you to (a) attract media attention; (b) get more back links to your website without sending each website an email request; and (c) get more visibility especially if your press release gets in Google News or Yahoo News. http://www.prleap.com/sign_up.html http://i-newswire.com/ http://www.24-7pressrelease.com/ http://www.pressbox.co.uk/cgi-bin/links/add.cgi http://www.pr.com/press-releases http://www.prfree.com/ http://www.clickpress.com/releases/index.shtml http://www.theopenpress.com/ http://www.przoom.com/ http://www.prweb.com http://www.newswiretoday.com/ http://www.free-press-release.com/ 5. Submit articles. Write articles and submit them to websites accepting author submissions. You get exposure for your business; establishes you as an authority in your field, and allows you to get backlinks for your website. If 50 websites publish your article and it contains a link back to your website, then you easily get 50 links from a single article. The more links you have, the greater your chances for increasing your search engine rankings. Here is a comprehensive list of where to submit your articles http://answers.yahoo.com/question/;_ylt=AhzreGmnCUicOoyedqypscUjzKIX?qid=1006022407481 6. Improve your conversion. Getting visitors is one thing; getting them to buy your products is a whole different story. Read the article " How To Sell More on the Web: 30 Tips To Increase Conversion Rates For An Ecommerce Site " http://www.powerhomebiz.com/092006/ecommerce.htm for tips on how to improve your conversion rates. 7. Post a link to your site for free where it is allowed (always read the Terms of Use). Examples are: Craigslist http://www.craigslist.com Google Base http://base.google.com Classifieds for Free http://www.classifiedsforfree.com/... Text Link Exchange http://www.txtswap.com/ Recycler.com http://www.recycler.com/ Yahoo Classifieds http://classifieds.yahoo.com/ US Free Ads http://www.usfreeads.com/
