BBC introduces Red Button to the internet, thinks they'll be great pals

Since 1999, the BBC's Red Button feature has delivered alternative camera angles, sports scores and the like over broadcast spectrum, but it's now set to become internet enabled. Channel surfers shouldn't expect a full-blown web experience, however, as the Beebs stresses it's not about to include everything and the kitchen sink in terms of functionality. Rather, their Connected Red Button aims for simplicity. Punching the clicker could bring up the iPlayer to catch previous episodes of shows or save recipes from a cooking program for later viewing on a computer or smartphone. Companion screen experiences such as the Antiques Roadshow app, which is slated for a September release, are also part of their web-connected roadmap. Mum's the word on when these new features might roll out, but we're promised the BBC's Olympics coverage will give us a taste of what's to come.

Two men have been remanded in custody after appearing before Blanchardstown District Court charged in connection with the biggest inland drugs seizure of cocaine in this country.

Gareth Hopkins from Beech Park in Leixlip, and Abraham Shodiya, with an address at Carnlough Road in Cabra, have been charged with the possession of cocaine for sale or supply.

42-year-old Abraham Shodiya is charged with four counts of possessing cocaine for sale of supply last Tuesday at the carpark at the Maldron Hotel in Tallght, and at Ballycoolin Industrial Estate.

His co-accused, 32-year-old Garth Hopkins from Leixlip is facing two charges of having drugs for sale or supply at Ballycoolin Industrial Estate.

Both men were remanded in custody to appear again in Court next week.

Welfare centres have been set up at hotels in Clonakilty and Glanmire in County Cork for families flooded out of their homes following last night?s torrential rain.

The clean-up operation is underway across Cork city and county after after the flooding affected dozens of homes and businesses.

Strategic planning is a very complicated management tool. There are numerous approaches to the strategic planning process, yet there is only one focus which is on results or outcomes. One thing should be very clear, strategic planning is not concerned on how outcomes are achieved, but is bent on defining what those results or outcomes should be.Strategic planning has a very colorful history that dates back to ancient Greek civilization.? HOUSTON (AP) ? Retired Texas firefighter Raul Rodriguez, armed with a handgun and video camera, had claimed he was standing his ground and had no choice but to use deadly force when he fatally shot his unarmed neighbor after confronting him about a noisy party.

A jury decided otherwise Wednesday, sentencing Rodriguez to 40 years in prison for killing the neighbor, Kelly Danaher, a 36-year-old elementary school teacher. Prosecutors said they are hopeful the punishment will stop others from settling matters with violence and trying to use Texas' version of a stand-your-ground law as a defense.

"I think it sends a clear message that this was not a case of stand-your-ground," said prosecutor Kelli Johnson. "And I think from his behavior, his intent, the provocation ... shows that this had ... nothing to do with self-defense."

Rodriguez, who faced up to life in prison for the 2010 killing, will be eligible for parole in 20 years. Jurors deliberated about five hours Wednesday before reaching their verdict. The same jury convicted him of murder on June 13.

His reference to standing his ground was similar to the claim made by George Zimmerman, a neighborhood watch volunteer who is citing Florida's stand-your-ground law in his defense in the fatal February shooting of an unarmed teenager, Trayvon Martin. Rodriguez's case, however, was decided under a different kind of self-defense doctrine.

During closing arguments earlier Wednesday in the trial's punishment phase, Johnson referenced Zimmerman but told jurors that case was different from what Rodriguez was convicted of doing.

Danaher's family members said they wished the jury had sent a stronger message when sentencing Rodriguez.

"Nothing will be enough," Danaher's wife, Mindy, said. "It's not going to bring Kelly back. I just want (Rodriguez) to be in there forever."

Kelly Danaher's mother, Connie, called Rodriguez a "hateful coward."

"Eternal fire and damnation is not enough for what you took from us," she said in court, reading from her victim statement.

The night of the shooting, 46-year-old Rodriguez was angry about the noise coming from a birthday party at his neighbor's home in Huffman, an unincorporated area about 30 miles northeast of Houston. The retired Houston-area firefighter, who had a concealed handgun permit, went over and got into an argument with Danaher and two other men.

In a 22-minute video he recorded that night, Rodriguez can be heard telling a police dispatcher "my life is in danger now" and "these people are going to go try and kill me." He then said, "I'm standing my ground here," and fatally shot Danaher and wounded the other two men.

Defense attorney Neal Davis said he was disappointed with the sentence and worried others might be wrongly charged for standing their ground in situations where they fear for their lives.

"When you're out there in a situation where you're truly in fear for your life and you're having to make a split-second decision, sometimes those decisions might not be correct. It doesn't mean you should be charged with murder," Davis said. "But I think that's going to be the trend, that people who stand their ground in public places and who lawfully have a weapon to use deadly force face a very real chance of getting charged with murder."

But Johnson said Rodriguez was convicted and sentenced because he abused Texas law.

"This was not a man that truly knew the law or truly took it seriously," the prosecutor said. "He used it to hide behind it. It was a shield for him, to do what he wanted to do."

Jurors declined to comment about the sentence.

Texas' version of a stand-your-ground law is known as the Castle Doctrine. It was revised in 2007 to expand the right to use deadly force. The new version allows people to defend themselves in their homes, workplaces or vehicles. It also says a person using force cannot provoke the attacker or be involved in criminal activity at the time. Legal experts say the expansion in general gave people wider latitude on the use of deadly force.

Prosecutors called Rodriguez the aggressor and said he could have walked away from the confrontation safely before the shooting. Rodriguez's attorneys argued he was defending himself when one of the men lunged at him and he had less than two seconds to respond.

At trial, prosecutors tried to show Rodriguez had a history of not getting along with Danaher and other neighbors. Rodriguez's ex-wife, neighbors and former co-workers testified during the punishment phase that he was abusive, a bad neighbor and had once shot a dog.

Rodriguez's attorneys did not call any witnesses to the stand before the jury convicted him. But they presented more than a dozen witnesses, including his wife and sons, during the punishment phase. One son said Rodriguez shot the dog because it was threatening his family.

Relatives testified he was not abusive, always stressed gun safety and was not cavalier with his weapons.

Defense attorney William Stradley said Rodriguez "understands that what he's done is difficult and obviously if he could go back and change it he would."

One of the primary reasons behind this misinterpretation is due to the size of the sector. Insurance companies, various banks, pension funds, money lenders, security firms all encompass this sector. Best of all, this is only a very small fraction of the sector. The size of the sector has aided the media in setting headlines. Many of these headlines are aimed at the ethical problems of the sector.

In fact, this sector alone is worth over $50 trillion and is increasing at a steady rate of 8% a year. Interestingly enough, not even the gross domestic product is that high. With literally billions of transactions taking place annually, micro and macro, there are bound to be a few ethical issues. Even more interesting is the fact that the media never covers the good, always the bad; it?s where the money is.

If the executives had paid the employees their just dues, these unethical issues would not surface.

Many unethical issues are caused by the demands of the consumers. In order to keep the customer, the businesses bend a few rules. Claim falsification is one of the biggest ethical issues that plague the sector. If businesses would simply stick to the rules, despite consumer demands, these would not arise.

The financing industry is not a machine; it is not perfect. This $50 trillion industry has its faults here and there. However, in order to promote the industry, a few ethical issues need to be resolved. Small businesses need to stop making their profits their focus. The aim may be to make profit but it?s unethical when the consumers and the laws are neglected and/or bent. The industry needs to boost its professionalism.

Roughly half a million men and women completed a marathon in the U.S. last year, intrepid souls tackling the grueling 26.2-mile challenge for reasons as varied as the courses they ran. Completing the distance is no small task; completing the rigorous training leading up to it is no less impressive. And though the hobby is thriving domestically, runners are also heading abroad for international marathons that make for a truly unforgettable journey.

Whether it?s a runner?s first or 50th, each race is a unique experience with urban options, rural offerings and everything in between. The miles can wind through city streets ? like during the ING New York City Marathon, which cuts across New York?s five famous boroughs ? or follow majestic coastlines and quiet roads ? like the Big Sur International Marathon course near Carmel, Calif., which hugs the state?s historic Highway 1.

Running through a city allows for an unprecedented perspective on its personality and history, allowing you to pass right by world famous attractions and meet cheering locals. The London Marathon, for example, starts in Greenwich Park, weaves through London and around many of its marquee landmarks and ends in spectacular fashion near Buckingham Palace.
