Asia stocks rise on US data, budget talks

BANGKOK (AP) ? Asian stock markets posted gains Friday on optimism over a pair of positive U.S. economic reports and growing expectations that Washington will resolve a budget impasse before the end of the year.

Meanwhile, the release of an 880.3 billion yen ($10.7 billion) stimulus package by the Japanese government helped boost the Nikkei 225 index in Tokyo. The benchmark rose 0.8 percent to 9,480.26 in early trading.

Hong Kong's Hang Seng added 0.7 percent to 22,059.10 and Australia's S&P/ASX 200 advanced 0.8 percent to 4,512.90. South Korea's Kospi was nearly unchanged at 1,934.73. Benchmarks in Taiwan, Singapore and New Zealand also rose.

Investment sentiment was boosted by signs of improvement in the world's No. 1 economy.

The Commerce Department raised its estimate of third-quarter growth to an annual rate of 2.7 percent ? much better than the 2 percent rate estimated a month ago. A drop in claims for unemployment benefits. Additionally, the number of Americans applying for unemployment benefits dropped by 23,000 to 393,000 last week, the Labor Department said. The figures were in line with expectations.

Investors have been tracking the talks between the White House and Congress over the "fiscal cliff," a reference to sharp government spending cuts and tax increases scheduled to start Jan. 1 unless a deal is reached to cut the budget deficit. Economists have been warning that failure to resolve the issue will severely impact the U.S. economy, the world's largest.

Analysts said the focus of attention will likely remain on the U.S. in coming weeks, especially now that countries that use the euro and the International Monetary Fund have agreed to carry on funding nearly bankrupt Greece.

"For the day ahead, the 'fiscal cliff' will likely remain in focus while economic data are expected to take a back seat given a relatively light data calendar," said analysts from Credit Agricole CIB in Hong Kong.

No major progress was reported after contentious talks in Washington on Thursday, with Republican House Speaker John Boehner rebuffing a proposal by President Barack Obama because it lacked "sensible spending cuts." But it is widely expected that a compromise will be reached before the deadline.

Benchmark oil for January delivery was down 35 cents to $87.72 per barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract rose $1.58 to close at $88.07 on Thursday on the Nymex.

In currencies, the euro rose to $1.2997 from $1.2972 Thursday in New York. The dollar rose to 82.44 yen from 82.15 yen.

Military martial arts training in North Vancouver

A fit-looking guy with steely blue eyes, goatee and shortly cropped hair, Jackson Loychuk isn?t somebody you?d want to mess with.

He has a black belt in Hapkido and he?s also studied other martial arts. Plus, he can fight like Jason Bourne.

I knew him in high school. At Carson Graham secondary he was into boxing and wrestling. In his early 20s, searching for something ?more practical? he took classes with the Wolfe brothers, Dennis and Bill, both of whom had military backgrounds and were teaching a style of self defence called ?defendo? ? essentially military martial arts.

In 1999 Loychuk opened up his own gym in North Van, which is now called Mil-Spec Martial Arts and Fitness.

Since then, he?s trained all sorts of guys using the defendo-style method. From cops and soldiers to doctors, lawyers, contractors ? and even journalists.

So, I figured he was just the right guy to give me a crash course on self defence.

I was headed down to a prison in Washington State to write a story about a book club for inmates. Most of them had been convicted of murder.

When I learned that there would be no prison guards in the club meeting room and found out the title of the book to be discussed, Invitation to a Beheading by Vladimir Nabokov, I gulped.

So, I asked Loychuk to give me a private, two-hour session before I left.

Turns out Loychuk is a military martial arts buff. He notes that it was 007 ??James Bond ? who first brought military-style close-quarter battle techniques to larger audiences. That?s because Ian Flemming, the English author who wrote the Bond books, was a British operative in the Second World War who?d been trained in defendo, he adds.

Defendo was the expanded version of a hand-to-hand combat style created by cop William Fairburn for the Shanghai police that fused boxing, fencing, wrestling, jujutsu and some other martial arts. At the time, martial arts-trained thugs were regularly pummelling the local cops, so Fairburn wanted to better equip them for what he called ?gutter fighting.?

Then, during the Second World War, the fighting technique was taught to British special forces and spies.

It?s also the same style of close-quarter battle techniques in the Jason Bourne movies ? a series Loychuk praises for its fighting authenticity.

I didn?t expect to fight like Bond or Bourne after only one session, but I was hoping to learn a few survival skills ? at least until guards arrived.

But before we got going on the padded floor inside his gym, Loychuk wanted answers.

What did I know about the people in the book club? Where would I be sitting? Would the inmates be on the opposite side of the table? Were the chairs locked down?

?You need to take the whole environment into consideration,? he said.

He advised against taking a pen or pencil.

Later, he showed me a cool trick, taking a magazine and rolling it up in a certain way to make it as hard as a steel pipe.

He advised me to sit close to the door during my visit.

He talked about posture. I needed to show the prisoners they were not in charge without being confrontational.

In case something happened, I needed to know about the ?startle response.?

When attacked, the natural reaction is to retreat, he explained.

Instead he showed me how to put my guard up ? using a technique called the ?icebreaker? to mitigate any damage caused by a flurry of blows ? and move forward to clinch an attacker.

He discussed levels of force and demonstrated moves aimed at the eyes and throat.

?Stuff that incapacitates really quickly.?

He then demonstrated a choke hold on me. After I tapped out, he showed me how to escape that same move.

Finally, he showed me how to choke a would-be assailant.

Before I left, he went over a colour-coded threat awareness spectrum.

If you keep yourself in a highly elevated state for a prolonged period ? your adrenaline pumping ? you will quickly burn out, so you must be able to ramp up and down.

The spectrum runs like this: white (meditative), yellow (aware, still no danger), orange (perceived threat, ready for action), red (action) ? that?s when you ?go? he explained.

I tried to remember everything Loychuk had taught me as we parked in the visitors? lot at the prison in Washington State. At the front desk, a friendly prison guard fingered through some paperwork and then made a phone call. She later explained she didn?t have the proper paperwork to admit me inside the prison.

I stood stunned ? partly relived, I admit ? as the book club volunteer I?d driven down with disappeared behind a sliding iron door.

When I got back to Vancouver, I signed up for regular classes with Loychuk.

I wasn?t planning on a return to Monroe anytime soon but I?d enjoyed my session and liked idea of learning some self defence techniques.

I wasn?t alone. The others in the class, which included one woman, were just everyday people ??not a bunch of hoody sporting guys decorated in tattoos looking to become lethal weapons.

Loychuk says the classes appeal to the ?average guy who?s looking for different way to work out and learn some practical stuff.?

Practical stuff that could be used just in case you find yourself in the wrong place at the wrong time and there?s no other alternative.

?Who doesn?t want to look out for their family or themselves?? he asks.

Truth is, says Loychuk, the more time spent training, the less likely you are to find yourself in a bad spot.

After some training, his students carry themselves differently, he says. They don?t look like a target or victim.

And they?re not likely to get themselves into trouble because they are able to decode their environment.

As well has higher fitness ? and it?s a much different level of fitness than you?d get just working out on a treadmill, believe me ? he says his students walk out the gym?s doors with ?a lot of self-confidence because you have practical skill that will work when it needs to.?

Plus, as he says, who wouldn?t want to learn to fight like Jason Bourne?

King Street Cats: Adopt a Senior Pet-Meet Miss Kitty

November is Adopt a Senior Pet Month!

At animal shelters and rescue groups across the nation, there are an abundance of healthy senior pets looking for a special home to cherish them for the rest of their lives. Although shaping the life of a youngster sounds appealing, giving a second chance to an older companion can be equally rewarding. They like to share quiet moments, are already trained and usually do not chew or scratch everything in sight. "Older pets have plenty to offer adopters ? not the least of which is love," comments Jacque Schultz, ASPCA Companion Animal Programs Advisor.

King Street Cats runs an Award-Winning campaign called

where we feature our harder to adopt kitties.

Many of those kitties are senior kitties

who lost their home later in life, through no fault of their own.

Miss Kitty is one of those special kitties that we would like to highlight.

My name is Miss Kitty and I arrived here on 5-6-12 after my family gave me up because of allergies. I was born in February 2004. Although I'm an older kitty, I am in good health and really hoping that someone wants a kitty with a darling personality. I am a little uncertain around the other cats here so I have kept to myself. But I love people and have a beautiful outgoing personality with them. I am a loving girl who misses having a home. Will you adopt me?

Interested in Miss Kitty, or another one of our senior kitties?

CyanogenMod 101 nightlies now available for Nexus 4

At this point in time, ownership of Google's much sought-after Nexus 4 is still the pride of few, with most eager users stuck in delivery and ordering limbo. But for those of you who do lay claim to that unassuming slab of LG design, CyanogenMod's ready and willing to share some nightly perks. Released as a response to unofficial third party ROMs, experimental (read: unstable) builds of CM10.1 (built upon Android 4.2) are now available on the outfit's site. For now, these nightlies will be Nexus 4-only, but there are plans to open'em up to Nexus 10 owners soon. There's no word on when that final, polished 10.1 build will be ready for all Android devices, so for now, the keys to CM10.1 belong to a small group of privileged folks.

Sony unveils price, footage for PMW-F55 and PMW-F5 CinaAlta 4K camcorders

Looking for a hearty new camera rig to spice up your next indie film? Start saving: Sony finally went live with pricing for its PMW-F5 and PMW-F55 CineAlta PL-mount cameras. Following an LA screening of professionally shot 4K and HD footage, Sony mentioned that the high-end camcorders can be had for $34,900 and $19,400, respectively. The steeper priced PMW-F55 has a sharper edge, of course, and can natively shoot 4K, 2K or HD footage through a global shutter. The (comparatively) less expensive F5 can handle 4K video too, but needs the help of the AXS-R5 RAW recorder (a $6,300 add-on) to pull it off -- it also has a narrower color gamut and a rolling shutter. Roll on past the break for a full list of prices and accessories.

JPL employees demand probe of NASA's data security measures

Workers at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory are demanding that Congress investigate the agency's actions following the theft of a laptop computer containing personal information for up to 10,000 employees.

The incident is just the latest in a series of NASA disputes involving employee background checks.

The laptop was stolen from an employee's locked vehicle in Washington, D.C., on Oct. 31. Several weeks later, letters were sent to workers notifying them that personal information gathered in NASA background checks, including home addresses and Social Security numbers, was stolen, and that they were now at risk for identity theft.

On Wednesday, Pasadena attorney Dan Stormer said he planned to file a class-action lawsuit on behalf of current and former JPL employees.

"We are outraged," Stormer told reporters at a news conference. "The most sensitive, the most protected information that you can have, was released from our clients' background investigations."

Robert M. Nelson, a former JPL research scientist, said he quit in April because he viewed the government's background checks as excessively intrusive.

Nelson was among a group of employees who sued the federal government unsuccessfully in 2007 over privacy issues.

"It gives me little pleasure to say that we told you so," Nelson said. "But we did. Five years ago we warned of this possibility that if the government had this kind of information at this kind of detail, that it will surely be leaked."

Rep. Adam B. Schiff (D-Burbank), a member of the House Appropriations science subcommittee, called on NASA "to report on and accelerate its efforts to maintain data security."

Rep. Judy Chu (D-Monterey Park) said in a statement she would push the agency to improve data security. "NASA has previously had security breaches of sensitive information," she said. "It has to stop."

The stolen computer, which was password-protected but not encrypted, was never intended to leave NASA's Washington, D.C., building, officials said.

"It was removed from the building against agency policy," said Bob Jacobs, a NASA spokesman.

The employee who removed the laptop will be disciplined, and NASA is now rushing to encrypt all of its computers by Dec. 21, he said.

"Ultimately, NASA regrets the incident and the inconvenience it is causing everyone whose information may be exposed," Jacobs said.

In recent years, NASA has stopped asking questions about workers' sexual history and other sensitive topics, but some workers still view the background checks as invasive.

Josette Bellan, a JPL senior research scientist, said she submitted information for the background investigation in April, but it was initially rejected because in the comment section she wrote she was completing the form under duress. She then resubmitted the information, leaving the comment section blank.

Now Bellan is worried that her personal information may be leaked.

"I think that this is a great concern, not only to us, but to the entire nation," she said. "I hope more thought is given to this issue and finally, at the highest level, people are going to see it the way we do."

The art of drinking ?un caffe'? ? Flo'N The Go

By?Julia Engelbrecht (Kent State Unviersity)

?Vorrei un panino e un caffe macchiato, per favore?

The barista exchanges a perplexed look, and awkwardly continues with the request. After only being in Florence for a few short days, her reaction to my order seemed rude.

I continue to eat the panino and drink the caffe macchiato, as locals seemed to give the same perplexed look at my choice of lunch.

Little did I know, the difference between taking coffee in the Italy and the United States differs widely.

After two and a half months of residing in the city of renaissance, the differences relating to everything and anything ?caffe? are clearer than ever.

In the United States, coffee can be taken anywhere, anytime, with any kind of food. A preliminary mistake is one with drinking a coffee with a meal. While a Starbucks Pumpkin Spice Latte may be the perfect addition to an egg over easy with a piece of toast at 4 pm in the afternoon, in Italy that is not the case.

Although I personally will always enjoy a hot, venti-sized pumpkin spice latte at anytime of the day, the Italian explanation makes perfect sense. After a discussion concerning the ways in which Italians take coffee, a professor put it in the simplest of terms: caffe is sweet (when sugar is added), but lunchtime food, such as a panino or an egg, is salty. It just doesn?t make sense to mix those two flavors.

That being said, there is always room for a coffee throughout the day, but only after a meal to help digest the food that was just eaten. If a cappuccino is ordered, that may still deserve a confused expression from the waiter.

As a student in Florence, I was told that it is unacceptable to drink a cappuccino after 11am. Whether or not this is true, I still order cappuccinos later in the day, and thankfully have not received any dirty looks just yet.

One of the many upsides to having Italian coffee is the plethora of places to find coffee, which are called bars. Every corner you turn, you can count on a red-neon sign with the word ?bar?, convincing you that yes, you do need a coffee right now, even though had one a mere hour ago. The people standing at the counter that seem to be crowded around in no organized fashion are not just hogging the space, they are simply drink their morning coffee as an Italian would, standing at the bar.

This is a concept that took some time to adjust to. In the United States, the coffee is either for takeaway, or consumed at a table with a copy of the New York Times.

After some thought, it is clear that the Italians have found the perfect balance in their practice of standing at the counter to drink their coffee. Take away exists but is rare, and a coffee at the table can cost twice as much as standing at the bar. Standing at the bar allows one to consume their coffee in a timely matter without the need of a takeaway cup. The size of Italian coffee, another large difference from American coffee, does not need a cup for the road simply because it takes only a minute or two to drink it.

In Italy, coffee becomes a break in the day rather than a culture that requires a take away cup or large amounts to keep people awake at work or school.

The bar becomes a place to eat una brioche e un caffe, and experience the true companionship between Italians that takes time to see between Americans. At first glance from the lens of an American student, the way in which Italians take coffee seems strange, particular, and hard to grasp, but after observation and time, it is clear that the importance of coffee in Italy shows the culture that exists between Italians. It gives a time in the day to talk with the other people at the bar, break away from work or school. In Italy, coffee becomes more than a drink, rather it becomes the culture.

Google Appeals to German Public in Link Fee Fight

Germany's parliament on Thursday began discussing legislation that would allow the nation's news publishers to charge search engines for displaying links to, and snippets of, news articles. Before debate began Google launched a very public campaign against it. The proposed law would require search engines to seek permission from publishers to display links along with snippets or teasers from news articles.

Kevin Durant Has NBA?s Second Best Selling Jersey, Russell Westbrook 12th

on November 28, 2012M at 7:00 am

Kevin Durant has finished second to LeBron James yet again.

This time, Durant?s runner-up finish came off the court and was out of his control.

Durant?s No. 35 Thunder jersey is the league?s second best seller based on sales at the NBA store in New York City and on NBAStore.com from April through Nov. 26. James ranked first for the third times since 2001.

But this is the highest Durant has climbed on the list of the league?s most popular jerseys. In the league?s previous survey of the top 15 most popular jerseys Durant ranked eighth. He ranked seventh in April 2011 but fell one spot after the Dallas Mavericks? championship shot Dirk Nowitzki into the top 15 at No. 7. Durant ranked ninth in April 2010 and 15th in January 2010, which was his first time in the top 10 since his rookie season.

Russell Westbrook, meanwhile, debuts in the top 15 at No. 12, in between fellow point guards Deron Williams (11th) and Steve Nash (13th).

Rounding out the top 10 are Kobe Bryant, Carmelo Anthony, Derrick Rose, Rajon Rondo, Dwyane Wade, Blake Griffin, Dwight Howard and Chris Paul. Paul Pierce ranked 14th and Nowitzki was 15th.

The Thunder is the sixth most popular selling team, ranking in the top 10 for the third straight time. In April, the Thunder ranked seventh. In April 2011, the Thunder again ranked sixth.

New York is the league?s top-selling team for the first time since December 2004. Miami ranks second. The Los Angeles Lakers are third despite being the only team to have three players among the top 15 best selling jerseys. Chicago and Boston rank fourth and fifth, respectively.

Brooklyn ranks seventh, followed by the Los Angeles Clippers, San Antonio and Dallas.

Durant has been beaten out consistently by James for awards, accolades and accomplishments over the past three seasons, most notably in last year?s NBA Finals matchup between the Thunder and Heat. James also has secured two of the past three regular season MVP trophies, winning both over Durant. In mid-May, after finishing 185 points shy of James for MVP honors, Durant jokingly said he?s grown tired of second-place finishes.

?I?ve been second since high school,? Durant said. ?Second draft pick. Second best player (in the country behind Greg Oden) in high school. Second in MVP voting twice. So I?m over that being second stuff.?

In the Thunder?s season opener at San Antonio, Durant became the second youngest player to reach the 10,000-point milestone. He joined the club at 24 years, 34 days old.

The youngest to get there?

LeBron James, of course.

Cat Friend Vs. Dog Friend: If Humans Were Pets [VIDEO] ? SoMe ...

by admin

A new YouTube video sets out to answer the classic question: Do you prefer dogs or cats?
But rather than feature the furry rivals in an animalistic showdown, the video has humans starring as our favorite pets. There?s "dog-friend" and "cat-friend" ? both of whom live with a nameless Average Joe, our human (acting as a human).
Much like their real-life counterparts, the two pet-friends live up to their respective stereotypes. Dog-friend greets Average Joe with hysterical excitement, and constantly lavishes him with attention. Cat-friend, on the other hand, basically glowers and ignores Average Joe throughout the entire two-and-a-half-minute video.
Since going online last week, "… Continue reading?

Apple gets sales ban on some Samsung Galaxy products in the Netherlands

A Dutch court has banned sales of Samsung Electronics' Galaxy products that infringe on an Apple patent describing a way to scroll through a photo gallery using a touchscreen.?

The ban only applies to Galaxy products that run Android 2.2.1 and higher that don't use Samsung's proprietary photo gallery software, the Court of The Hague ruled on Wednesday.

Apple patented a way to scroll past the edge of a zoomed-in photo and see a glimpse of the next in a series of images, after which the initial photo bounces back onto the screen, a technique that Samsung has used in its Galaxy products. Samsung's proprietary photo gallery software replaces that bounce-back feature with a "blue flash" that illuminates the edge of the image.

Samsung already lost a case over the same patent after preliminary proceedings in the Netherlands last year, leading to a sales ban on the then-infringing Galaxy S, SII and Ace. After the verdict, Samsung adjusted its photo gallery software as a work around, and said it stopped delivering infringing products to clients as of the end of August 2011.

During the plea hearing in September, Samsung said that, since the last verdict, it uses its own technology in all its products in the Netherlands. Samsung, however failed to provide the court with evidence of the change, annoying the panel of judges.

"The argument raised by Samsung at the hearing that Samsung Benelux does not sell the infringing products any more, cannot lead to a rejection of the ban," wrote judge Peter Blok,?who presided over the panel of three judges in the verdict. Blok said he would grant the ban because Samsung refused to sign a declaration of abstinence committing to not infringing the patent.

The court ordered Samsung to tell Apple how much net profit it made from sales of infringing Galaxy products since June 27, 2011. A separate court procedure will determine how much of that profit Samsung must pay Apple.

If Samsung continues to infringe on the patent, it has to pay Apple a penalty of ?100,000 (US$129,000) for every day it violates the ban, the court ruled.

A Samsung spokeswoman said the company was disappointed with the court's ruling. Apple did not respond to a request for comment.

The Court of The Hague recently ruled that Samsung does not infringe on an Apple multitouch patent in another Dutch lawsuit between the companies. In January, the court is set to rule in yet another case between the two in a case about tablet design rights.

Vast emissions of carbon dioxide and methane from warming permafrost, not accounted for in climate predictions

ScienceDaily (Nov. 27, 2012) ? Permafrost covering almost a quarter of the northern hemisphere contains 1,700 gigatonnes of carbon, twice that currently in the atmosphere, and could significantly amplify global warming should thawing accelerate as expected, according to a new report released November 27 by the UN Environment Programme (UNEP).

Warming permafrost can also radically change ecosystems and cause costly infrastructural damage due to increasingly unstable ground, the report says.

Policy Implications of Warming Permafrost seeks to highlight the potential hazards of carbon dioxide and methane emissions from warming permafrost, which have not thus far been included in climate-prediction modelling. The science on the potential impacts of warming permafrost has only begun to enter the mainstream in the last few years, and as a truly "emerging issue" could not have been included in climate change modelling to date.

The report recommends a special IPCC assessment on permafrost and the creation of national monitoring networks and adaptation plans as key steps to deal with potential impacts of this significant source of emissions, which may become a major factor in global warming.

"Permafrost is one of the keys to the planet's future because it contains large stores of frozen organic matter that, if thawed and released into the atmosphere, would amplify current global warming and propel us to a warmer world," said UN Under-Secretary General and UNEP Executive Director Achim Steiner.

"Its potential impact on the climate, ecosystems and infrastructure has been neglected for too long," he added. "This report seeks to communicate to climate-treaty negotiators, policy makers and the general public the implications of continuing to ignore the challenges of warming permafrost."

Most of the current permafrost formed during or since the last ice age and extends to depths of more than 700 meters in parts of northern Siberia and Canada. Permafrost consists of an active layer of up to two metres in thickness, which thaws each summer and refreezes each winter, and the permanently frozen soil beneath.

Should the active layer increase in thickness due to warming, huge quantities of organic matter stored in the frozen soil would begin to thaw and decay, releasing large amounts of CO? and methane into the atmosphere.

Once this process begins, it will operate in a feedback loop known as the permafrost carbon feedback, which has the effect of increasing surface temperatures and thus accelerating the further warming of permafrost -- a process that would be irreversible on human timescales.

Arctic and alpine air temperatures are expected to increase at roughly twice the global rate, and climate projections indicate substantial loss of permafrost by 2100. A global temperature increase of 3?C means a 6?C increase in the Arctic, resulting in an irreversible loss of anywhere between 30 to 85 per cent of near-surface permafrost.

Warming permafrost could emit 43 to 135 gigatonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent by 2100 and 246 to 415 gigatonnes by 2200. Emissions could start within the next few decades and continue for several centuries.

Permafrost emissions could ultimately account for up to 39 per cent of total emissions, and the report's lead author warned that this must be factored in to the treaty to address global climate change expected to replace the Kyoto Protocol.

"The release of carbon dioxide and methane from warming permafrost is irreversible: once the organic matter thaws and decays away, there is no way to put it back into the permafrost," said lead author Kevin Schaefer, from the University of Colorado's National Snow and Ice Data Center.

"Anthropogenic emissions' targets in the climate change treaty need to account for these emissions or we risk overshooting the 2?C maximum warming target," he added.

Most of the recent climate projections are biased on the low side relative to global temperature because the models do not at this time include the permafrost carbon feedback, the report says. Consequently, targets for anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions based on these climate projections would be biased high.

Ecosystems and Infrastructure under Threat

Warming permafrost also brings negative consequences in terms of ecosystem and infrastructure damage.

The dominant ecosystems in permafrost regions are boreal forests to the south and tundra to the north. Permafrost is impermeable to water, so rain and melt water pool on the surface -- forming innumerable lakes and wetlands which are used by migratory birds as summer breeding grounds.

Ecosystem disturbances due to permafrost degradation will change species composition, and with it animal habitat and migration, according to the report.

Longer growing seasons due to higher temperatures favour the growth of shrubs and woody vegetation resulting in a northward migration of the tree line. Permafrost degradation and the resultant drying of the land can also result in disturbances such as fires. Fire in boreal forests has recently increased in intensity and frequency, and could become more common in tundra regions.

However, thawing permafrost is structurally weak, resulting in foundational settling that can damage or even destroy buildings, roads, pipelines, railways and power lines. Infrastructure failure can have dramatic environmental consequences, as seen in the 1994 breakdown of the pipeline to the Vozei oilfield in Northern Russia, which resulted in a spill of 160,000 tonnes of oil, the world's largest terrestrial oil spill.

Roads, buildings and other infrastructure in discontinuous permafrost, which tends to be warmer, and along the Arctic coast, where salt content means small temperature changes can turn ice to ground water, are most vulnerable to damage.

Climate change already could add up to US$6.1 billion to future costs for public infrastructure in the US state of Alaska between now and 2030, for example, and while there are only a handful of studies and reports evaluating the economic impacts of permafrost degradation, these indicate infrastructure maintenance and repair costs will increase.

"Thawing permafrost represents a dramatic physical change with huge impacts to ecosystems and human infrastructure," said Mr. Schaefer. "Individual nations need to develop plans to evaluate the risks, costs, and mitigation strategies to protect human infrastructure in permafrost regions most vulnerable to thaw."

Recommendations

The report issues the following specific policy recommendations to address the potential economic, social and environmental impacts of permafrost degradation in a warming climate:

  • Commission a Special Report on Permafrost Emissions: The IPCC may consider preparing a special assessment report on how carbon dioxide and methane emissions from warming permafrost would influence global climate to support climate change policy discussions and treaty negotiations.
  • Create National Permafrost Monitoring Networks: To adequately monitor permafrost, individual countries may consider taking over operation of monitoring sites within their borders, increasing funding, standardizing the measurements and expanding coverage. This applies particularly to countries with the most permafrost: Russia, Canada, China and the United States. The International Permafrost Association should continue to coordinate development and the national networks should remain part of the Global Terrestrial Network for Permafrost.
  • Plan for Adaptation: Nations with substantial permafrost, such as those mentioned above, may consider evaluating the potential risks, damage and costs of permafrost degradation to critical infrastructure. Most nations currently do not have such plans, which will help policy makers, national planners and scientists quantify costs and risks associated with permafrost degradation.

Skeletons in cave reveal Mediterranean secrets

ScienceDaily (Nov. 28, 2012) ? Skeletal remains in an island cave in Favignana, Italy, reveal that modern humans first settled in Sicily around the time of the last ice age and despite living on Mediterranean islands, ate little seafood. The research is published November 28 in the open access journal PLOS ONE by Marcello Mannino and colleagues from the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology, Germany.

Genetic analysis of the bones discovered in caves on the Egadi islands provides some of the first mitochondrial DNA data available for early humans from the Mediterranean region, a crucial piece of evidence in ancestry analysis. This analysis reveals the time when modern humans reached these islands. Mannino says, "The definitive peopling of Sicily by modern humans only occurred at the peak of the last ice age, around 19,000 -26,500 years ago, when sea levels were low enough to expose a land bridge between the island and the Italian peninsula."

The authors also analyzed the chemical composition of the human remains and found that these early settlers retained their hunter-gatherer lifestyles, relying on terrestrial animals rather than marine sources for meat. According to the study, despite living on islands during a time when sea level rise was rapid enough to change within a single human lifetime, these early settlers appear to have made little use of the marine resources available to them. The authors conclude, "These findings have crucial implications for studies of the role of seafood in the diet of Mediterranean hunter-gatherers."

Galapagos tortoises are a migrating species

ScienceDaily (Nov. 27, 2012) ? The Galapagos giant tortoise, one of the most fascinating species of the Galapagos archipelago, treks slowly and untiringly across the volcanic slopes. Scientists of the Max Planck Institute for Ornithology in Radolfzell, together with the Charles Darwin Foundation, have used GPS technology and modern 3D acceleration measurements to find out that especially the dominant male tortoise wanders up to 10 kilometres into the highlands of the island. Only the fully grown animals migrate, the young tortoises stay year round in the lowlands. The reason for this and the question of why the animals don't rest during the dry season are not known yet.

The large, dominant male Galapagos giant tortoises usually start their annual migration at the beginning of the dry season.

Even Charles Darwin anticipated that the giant tortoises wandered large distances. In the cool dry season, the highlands of Santa Cruz are engulfed in fog which allows the vegetation to grow despite the lack of rain. In the lowlands, however, there is no thick layer of clouds and the tortoises' vegetation is not available year round. Adults, which can weigh up to 250 kilogram, spend the dry season in the higher regions at an elevation of 400 meters above sea level. However, since the food is not as nutritious there, they trek back to the lower zones where there is succulent vegetation in abundance as soon as the rainy season begins.

In order to study the migratory pattern more closely, Stephen Blake from the Max Planck Institute for Ornithology and his colleague Washington Tapia from the Galapagos National Park secured GPS loggers with 3D acceleration monitors onto 17 adult tortoises. This allowed the scientists to determine the animals' exact position and behaviour over a period of two years. In order to gather information on the entire population, the researchers noted the size, sex and location of each tortoise they met on their monthly hikes along the volcanic hillsides. They combined the GPS data with the temperature data and information about availability of vegetation.

The results show that the tortoises have a partial migration system, where not every individual migrates. Only the adult animals wander and only the larger specimens are more likely to move. In June they start their slow, tedious march which can be up to ten kilometres long into the highlands. Adult females remain in the lowlands until they lay their eggs and then they also make their way to the highlands. In contrast, the smaller tortoises stay in the lower elevated areas all year round.

Although giant tortoises are able to survive for up to one year without nourishment, which made them a popular staple for seamen, they nevertheless wander for large distances searching for food as this study shows for the first time. Why don't they just look for a shelter? The question of why the younger animals don't migrate hasn't been answered by the scientists yet. "Either the energy expenditure of this strenuous hike is too high, or there is still enough food available for the smaller animals." Stephen Blake suspects, "perhaps the younger animals can't tolerate the wet cold climate of the higher regions."

In other species, the largest and the most dominant individual does not migrate because it can best defend itself against its competitors. It doesn't have to leave to survive. However, among the Galapagos tortoises, it's usually the largest and most dominant individual which takes on this arduous journey.

Future studies on giant tortoise species of the other Galapagos Islands with varying ecological conditions will show how environment influences the migration scheme of these closely related reptiles. The scientists also want to include factors such as age, size, sex and morphology in their studies to see why the behaviour changes in different lifetime stages and what the trigger of migration is.

Despite the threat of hunting, invasive species such as goats and rats, and the loss of habitat due to man, the Galapagos Tortoise still shows its original migrating behaviour. This and future studies will help to maintain this behaviour with the help of effective measures such as establishing corridors, preserving key habitats, keeping tortoise-friendly roads and maintaining less urban development. Based on its importance to the Galapagos Archipelago ecosystem as an herbivore and seed disperser, the annual migration of the tortoise must be preserved.

gulftoday.ae | EU agrees on significant debt relief deal for Greece

BRUSSELS: Greece won breathing space on Tuesday with long-frozen eurozone loans to restart from December and a first clear admission that a chunk of the country's debt burden will need to be written off down the line.

After 13 hours of talks in Brussels, the eurozone and the International Monetary Fund agreed to unlock 43.7 billion euros ($56 billion) in loans and on the need to grant significant debt relief for decades to come.

Greece must still meet a series of agreed conditions but "the decision will certainly reduce the uncertainty and strengthen confidence in Europe and in Greece," said European Central Bank President Mario Draghi who left the talks before a final press conference.

Starved of bailout financing since the summer, Greek Prime Minister Antonis Samaras hailed the deal in Athens, while German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble said the package would be presented to German lawmakers by the end of the week.

Other member states will also have to obtain their parliament's approval for the deal.

"Everything has gone well," Samaras told reporters in Athens.

"All Greeks have fought (for this decision) and tomorrow is a new day for every Greek person," he added.

Finance ministers, the IMF and the ECB said the money would be paid in four installments from Dec.13 through until the end of March, conditional on Greece funnelling income back to creditors at source and on the implementation by Athens of tax reforms settled with creditors.

The initial market response was upbeat.

On currency markets the euro was stronger in Asian trade as investors breathed a sigh of relief over the deal for Greece.

The 17-nation currency bought $1.2980 and 106.46 yen in Tokyo morning trade after briefly topping $1.30 for the first time in about a month.
That was up from $1.2971 and 106.38 yen in New York trade late on Monday.

Asian stock markets also enjoyed the news in early trading, with Tokyo shares rising 0.38 per cent by the break, Hong Kong up 0.25 per cent and Sydney gaining 0.68 per cent.

The results of the "labourious" negotiations according to IMF head Christine Lagarde are intended to see Greece's debt-to-GDP ratio fall from an estimated 144 percent to 124 per cent come 2020, and "substantially below 110 per cent" of gross domestic product by 2022.

"The IMF wanted to make sure the euro partners would take the necessary actions to bring Greece's debt on a sustainable path," said Lagarde.

"I can say today that it has been achieved."

There will be a mixture of techniques used to bring down Greece's debt burden.

These will begin with a buyback by Greece of old debt that has fallen in value on commercial money markets as well as national central banks across the eurozone foregoing profits on holdings of Greek debt whose worth has slumped.

Beautiful contemporary bedroom

MILAN, Italy???Have you ever noticed how certain places have the ability to make us feel at ease, while other places fail to welcome us in the right way? Why is that? What can help us to exist in harmony with the spaces in which we live? A great help is Feng Shui (FS), an ancient Chinese discipline that is currently so fashionable as well as being distorted by its true meaning by some misinformation and superficiality of self-proclaimed experts. Therefore, we have asked Paola Neglia, consultant and teacher of Chue Style Feng Shui?since 2008 to shed some light on the topic. ?She studied in Milan at the school certified by the Chue Foundation International, founded by Grand Master Chan Kun Wah.

Feng Shui in professional and public places. An example of application of Feng Shui in HUB MILAN stores

How would you define the FS? ?Rediscovering your own well-being through the improvement and harmonization of your environment?, explains Paola. FS studies the flow and movement of energy in the environment and channels it, putting the person at the centre. People are influenced by their surroundings, shapes, colours, layouts, furniture, objects and even by the exterior and entrances to their homes. The interrelationship between people and their environments could help us achieve a better life.Feng Shui: Lessons of Well being | FG Magazine

Lo Pan

What are the elements that distinguish the authentic FS from ?vulgar imitation?? ?We in the industry called fake FS ?Fast Feng Shui? or ?Pop FS?: some self-taught FS teacher or expert who has read all the books on the subject. FS works in all aspects of life, so it is essential to look for serious professionals: it takes at least two years of study to learn the basics and be authorized to provide counselling; then, it is essential to practice. Each consultation is unique and personalised. The same advice is not suitable for everyone nor can it be given from a distance?. ?In fact, the FS has no fixed rules on how a house should be, ?each person has different energetic constitution and life goals, so the manuals may be too general and not very effective. Let me give you an example: a common belief attributed to FS says the bed should be facing north, a very cold and dark area from the energetic point of view, but this area could exacerbate depression! Therefore, you need an expert?.

FS is not synonymous with home-neutral, or bio-architecture, it is not magic or superstition: having at home Chinese coins to attract abundance or gold dolphins to attract the love of your life, are part of Chinese superstitions and beliefs, but this is not FS!

We must take into account a person?s taste and the culture
?We must take into account a person?s taste and the culture in which he or she is fully immersed. Including rare elements in an environment would not help, to the contrary, I am sure if I put a Chinese red light in a living room in Milan, it would be a nuisance instead! We need to work with what surrounds us and what we like?, continues Paula. Nevertheless, the starting point of any assessment of an environment is to be aware of what you are doing, ?to change something in your home you must first understand why you need a change and what should be changed. If the environment in which we live?doesn?t?represent our personality?any more?or we?re trapped in some aspect of our life, then we need to renew the environment to sustain us in a new stage of life?.

And what does the FS says about trends and fashion? ?After an in-depth energy analysis, it may be suggested to wear the colour that recalls the most suitable energy to a person, but if his house is in disharmony, the person may not benefit from it in the long run. Unfortunately there are those who, even in this context, uses the name of FS as an advertisement to attract customers?, finalises the FS expert.

Needless to say, beware of imitations and avoid the do-it-yourself Feng Shui!
