Wylie Student Takes Advantage of UT-Dallas' Community Garden ...

Wylie Student Community Garden

UT-Dallas sophomore Michael Burleson isn?t your run-of-the-mill student. Instead of nestling into his dorm room and playing video games, the Wylie resident says,??I can?t stand being inside all the time. I?d seen the Community Garden here for a year, and finally had time for it.?

Burleson said he gardened some at his family?s Wylie home, and was always eager to plant and grow things he know how to cook with. His family is Italian, so ingredients like tomatoes, basil, rosemary, garlic, and onions could always be found out back. Now, the sophomore at UT-Dallas is helping upkeep the community garden that gives students, faculty and staff the chance to grow their own fruits and veggies. Community garden members have the opportunity to learn from other participants about what grows well in the Texas climate, how to properly plant seeds, and how often to water.

The UT-Dallas community garden got its start back in 2006 with funding from the?UT Dallas Alumni Fund and Student Affairs. This year, it was relocated this year to a fenced-in site near the intersection of?Drive A and Drive H. Plots in the garden are assigned on a first-come, first-serve basis, and there is no fee for a plot. Gardeners are required to attend group meetings, assist on monthly work days, and participate in events. They are also responsible for maintaining their individual plots.

It?s a great exercise in gardening, as plots must be kept free of weeds, pests and diseases, and organic gardening methods are encouraged. Unless otherwise approved by?the Office of Sustainability,?synthetic pesticides, herbicides, fungicides or fertilizers may not be used.?Burleson says he appreciates that the Community Garden is environmentally friendly and that it helps students learn self-sufficiency.

Adds Burleson, ?I feel we all have to enhance our commitment to the environment. Ultimately, everybody?s got to learn to do this in their own backyard.? The community garden is like a living lab for students; a place where they can get their hands dirty. It?s a place to problem-solve, create, and have fun.
