Facebook passwords: why companies don?t use them to see your posts
Several states are considering laws to bar companies form asking for applicants? social media passwords. But the social-media world is easily mined even without passwords, experts say.?
From Connecticut to California, concern over a rise in employer demands for access to prospective employee?s social media logins and passwords is leading lawmakers to take action.
Skip to next paragraphThere is pending legislation in at least five states ? including Minnesota, Illinois, California, and Massachusetts ? and the Maryland legislature just passed its own version of a bill prohibiting the practice.
But as this groundswell grows, questions are rising about whether laws will actually stop employers from seeking out digital information in an increasingly digital age.
?There is a legitimate and growing concern about privacy on the Internet,? says Katharine Parker of Proskauer Employment Law Counseling & Training Group in New York, who advises employers on hiring practices and other HR issues. ?Is there any privacy on the Internet, should there be, and what laws are needed to regulate it are all questions that are just now being asked.?
Indeed, many experts say that companies do not need to ask for Facebook passwords to get information on applicants or employees. The notion that privacy settings make things on Facebook private ?is not necessarily accurate,? says Ms. Parker.
?Even if you have a lot of privacy settings on Facebook, it?s not private if you have lots of friends,? she says.
There are many ways to get information from applicants? social media without asking for their password, says Kabrina Krebel Chang, assistant professor of business law at Boston University?s School of Management.
?In many cases, the applicant is Facebook friends with someone already at the workplace,? she notes via e-mail.
There is nothing to stop that friend from showing others in the company the Facebook page. ?If there are no direct Facebook friends, many applicants are ?friends? of other pages or have liked other pages such as alma maters, interest groups, products, etc.,? Ms. Chang adds.
Human resources departments will simply switch to sending ?friend requests? to applicants and presenting this view of the individual during the interview process, says Charles Palmer, executive director of the Center for Advanced Entertainment & Learning Technologies at Harrisburg University of Science and Technology in Pennsylvania.
?It?s a little less overt and completely legal,? he says via e-mail, adding that he expects ?to see more investment into ?social forensics? to help weed out the applicant pool.?
The main thing for potential ? and current ? employees to remember is that any information that can be accessed on a computer is potentially going to be used in a hiring process, says Deborah Sweeny, CEO of MyCorporation.com.
Most people with time and the right knowledge and technology ?can access information that?s been posted online, even if it?s been posted to a social media profile that?s been made private,? she says via e-mail. Both employees and employers need to realize that anything they put online, could end up being public, she adds.
For these reasons, some experts think it is not only unnecessary but unwise for companies to ask for social media passwords.
?Once you ask for this kind of access, then you are on notice for anything that you might find,? says Todd Taylor, an attorney with Moore & Van Allen who specializes in communication technology. ?I would advise against going after information that isn?t already public for the simple reason that if you see something and you don?t act on it, you have the potential issue of a negligent hire down the road.?

Mom drops son at day care, returns to find 3 dead

People in the street reacted to the scene of a triple murder in a suburban Minneapolis home, Monday.

MINNEAPOLIS -- A woman who became suspicious and called 911 after dropping her son off at a suburban Minneapolis day care provider's home stayed on the line as she went back to the house and discovered three people shot to death, according to transcripts of the call.
The Brooklyn Park Police Department released the transcript of the call that took place Monday, minutes after investigators believe a lone male fatally shot DeLois Brown and her elderly parents.??

The transcript provides a chilling account of how the mother became suspicious after seeing a man in a hooded sweatshirt and a glove on one hand on a bicycle outside Brown's home. She told police she called Brown to warn her but spoke to her only briefly before she heard the word "no" and the phone went dead.

When she turned around and returned to the house, she spotted the man riding away with something under his coat. Her alarm grew as she told the dispatcher that her son was inside and that the door was open.
Police were still searching for the lone suspect in the shooting deaths of Brown, 59, and her parents, James Bolden, 82, and Clover Bolden, 81.
'No! No!'
The Hennepin County Medical Examiner said Wednesday that all three victims died of gunshot wounds, and that Brown and her mother had been shot in the head.
The caller stayed on the phone with the 911 dispatcher while she went inside to see if Brown, her son and the others were OK.
She quickly found her son, who was uninjured, but she couldn't find the day care provider right away. She called out to Brown repeatedly, her voice imbued suddenly with horror as she came upon Brown and her parents in a bedroom.

"No! No!" the mother exclaimed to the dispatcher. "They're in their bed. ... There's blood all over them."
The dispatcher instructed the woman to go outside. The transcript shows her crying and praying as she called to her son and told him to get in the car as police arrived on the scene.

Police are offering a $10,000 reward for information leading?to an arrest and conviction in the case. Authorities were still saying little else about the slayings because the investigation is ongoing.
Inspector Todd Milburn said authorities are still looking for a man in his 20s who they believe fled on a BMX bicycle. He was wearing jeans and a blue sweatshirt or jacket with a gray hood and white stripes on the back near the shoulders.
Quiet neighborhood
Milburn said police do not believe the suspect was still in the immediate vicinity, and they were working with a number of agencies on the case. The FBI said it was providing assistance to Brooklyn Park police when requested.
The triple slaying is not related to the death of a woman shot in a domestic-related incident Tuesday night just a mile and a half away, Milburn said.

Ashantai Finch, 32, died of a gunshot wound. A man was arrested in that case and remained in custody Wednesday pending possible charges.
"We're focused on solving both crimes, both events," Milburn said. "That's our focus right now."
Milburn said both incidents happened in neighborhoods that are relatively quiet and have few problems with police.
Monday's homicides were the first this year in the Minneapolis suburb. There were five killings in 2011, but Brooklyn Park reported a 20-year low in overall crime in 2011.

Wind At Sea Is Strangely Van Goghish, Says NASA
Yesterday, we took a look at invisible winds suddenly made visible, streaming across the Earth. This being the blustery season, I've got more wind today, this time streaming across the sea, but looking uncannily like a van Gogh sky.
Most of the surface currents in the ocean are shaped by wind. In this visualization from the folks at NASA, the ocean is rich with lazy spirals that move in great circular sweeps (called "gyres") clockwise in the northern hemisphere, counterclockwise in the south. Think of the ocean surface here as a reflection of the winds above, a kind of watery mirror (though the spinning of the Earth, tugs of sun and moon and obstruction of continents play a part.) Click on this video, and you'll see the dance of wind-on-water everywhere.
I like watching the Gulf Stream roar past the tip of Florida in the beginning, all white and purposeful, heading up the North American coast. There's something playful about water and wind bumping into large land masses likeAfrica, breaking into whirligig spirals, spinning along the shore. Then there's the equator, which in this version seems almost wall-like. As the winds approach it, they flatten into jet like streams racing along a corridor.
?What this map doesn't show is the newest discovery created by ocean gyres. It's called the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, a vast, Texas-sized clump of human garbage floating in the Pacific. Created by a convergence of ocean currents and wind somewhere betweenHawaii andCalifornia, it's not visible from satellites. Apparently, a thick blanket of pop bottles and chemical sludge sinks a little below the surface so it can't be seen from above and, anyway, it turns out garbage doesn't clump in a spiral; it looks more like a Nickelodeon splat, so if we could see the Garbage Patch, it would ruin the mood created here.
This is an image of wild wind, water and spiral beauty. And what does it say about us that our first human mark is a splat that feels like we've dropped some mud onto a van Gogh painting?

Costner: I tried to help Whitney through letters

In an upcoming interview with Anderson Cooper, Kevin Costner tells the talk-show host?he?twice wrote?letters to?his "Bodyguard" co-star?Whitney Houston?to try and encourage her to conquer her addictions.
?There are some people that really love Whitney, and a couple times during the last seven, eight years, (they) asked me, would I write her a letter?? recalls the actor, who spoke at the singer's February funeral. ?She would always be close to me, she would always be somebody I appreciated.?
?When someone says, will you write a letter to someone who you know is having trouble ? I did.? he adds. ?I don?t know if those letters were ever read.?
Costner spoke to Cooper on?the host's?daytime talk show, ?Anderson,? for an episode that will air in May. The actor is currently promoting his new mini-series, ?Hatfields & McCoys,? which premieres on the?History Channel on May 28.
Cooper asked Costner about?the toxicology report on Houston, which revealed chronic and long-term usage of cocaine by the singer.
?Was she going through those struggles when she was doing 'The Bodyguard'?? Cooper asked Costner.
?Not that I know of, no,? he replied. ?I elected to let Whitney have her life after 'The Bodyguard.'?
At Houston's funeral, Costner described the "Whitney that I knew? as someone who lacked self-confidence and always questioned her own abilities. He observed how such scrutiny both helped her to advance, and ultimately, led to her decline.
Costner told Cooper on his show, ?I know I have this level of celebrity, of fame, international, national, whatever you want to call it, but it?s a pretty surreal thing to think sometimes that you?re in the middle of another famous person?s life and you think to yourself, ?How the hell did I get famous? What is this some weird club that we?re in???
Costner also said that he had spoken to the the late Princess Diana about the possibility of her starring in a second "Bodyguard" movie. "I told her I would take of her just the same way that I took care of Whitney."
While it may sound like a pipe dream -- the famous former royal in a Hollywood film -- Costner told Cooper the princess was serious about it. ""She wanted me to write it for her," he said. "I said 'I'll tailor it for you if you're interested.' She goes, 'I am interested.'"
Like the first film, Costner would play a bodyguard who protects a famous woman from paparazzi and stalkers and then becomes romantically involved with her. He told Cooper he received a draft of the script for the proposed sequel on Aug. 31, 1997, the day before Diana's fatal Paris car crash.

Myth:?The best sales person makes the best sales manager.
Fact: Selling and managing are two very different positions with different demands and expectations. Most exceptional sales people do?not?make great sales managers. On the contrary, they usually make the worst sales managers for the following reasons:
- They were not properly educated, trained or coached to be a sales manager and a sales coach, or
- they are not personally suited to being a sales manager; their personality, motivations and ambitions do not match the qualities of effective sales managers. They tend to be competitive, personally ambitious, and have difficulty understanding why they are good and therefore struggle to transfer and teach how to be effective, instead telling people to be like them ?do like I do?, etc. which is not helpful.
So in the absence of proper sales strategy, sales force blueprints, clear sales processes and no formal sales and sales management education we see too many organisations promote their best sales people to sales management positions with no training, education or formal coaching support. I am not saying great sales people can not become great sales managers, many could but there needs to be a structured approach for them to make this transition, with the right support, coaching and training. Most of the time there isn?t any support process, which is why we still see ineffective sales management in many companies these days. Instead, they focus on throwing the training at their salespeople in trying to improve sales performance.
Experience has shown me that sales managers are the most critical when it comes to creating and driving sustainable sales performance change and improvement. Really proficient sales leadership and sales coaching can do wonders to improve the skills, strategies and competencies of average and elite salespeople alike.
In appointing a sales manager there are a few things we need to keep in mind. The best sales managers are leaders and coaches rather than administrators and organisers. They know they can not lead from behind a desk. Effective sales management consists of the following:
- Planning: Developing and owning the sales operating plan for the business unit in concert with marketing, service, and all other parts of the business,
- People development: Establishing the people resources needed to successfully execute the operating plan by hiring, coaching, developing, measuring and leading the ?right? people, and
- Proactive review: Managing revenue and profit by monitoring, controlling and reviewing sales, business, customer and competitor activity. Proactively reviewing the sales plan and consolidating this plan into the business forecast for the organisation.
Sadly, this is not how most sales managers are spending their time. Many are prevented from performing their optimal role. A recent study found that only 37% of the sales manager?s day is spent in planning, people development and proactive review. The rest of their time was spent with administration, reporting, reacting and handling customer issues.
So if you want to improve your overall sales results start by looking at your sales management. How well trained are they to be sales managers? Do they know what it takes to be an effective sales manager and sales coach? Does your business allow them to be sales managers in the truest sense or are you tying them up in administration and meetings? Are you training your sales people and your sales leaders?
Whatever answers you get make sure that you and your business place a value on sales management and get the right people in place to take charge of your sales teams. The results will speak for themselves.
Remember everybody lives by selling something.

Trayvon Martin shooter George Zimmerman has apparently launched a website?TheRealGeorgeZimmerman.com?to relay a message thanking his supporters, and to collect donations via PayPal for his living and defense expenses. The site had been down intermittently on Monday afternoon.
"I am the real George Zimmerman," a message on the site begins. "On Sunday February 26th, I was involved in a life altering event which led me to become the subject of intense media coverage. As a result of the incident and subsequent media coverage, I have been forced to leave my home, my school, my employer, my family and ultimately, my entire life. This website's sole purpose is to ensure my supporters they are receiving my full attention without any intermediaries."
The site's background is an image of a large American flag.
NBC News' Mara Schiavocampo said via Twitter that she can confirm the site is indeed Zimmerman's. The domain was privately registered on Sunday, according to NetworkSolutions.com records.

Earlier on Monday, Angela Corey, the special prosecutor appointed to investigate the shooting death of Martin, said that the case will not go to a grand jury.
The decision does not rule out the possibility that George Zimmerman, Martin's shooter, could be arrested.
According to Orlando's WFTV, Zimmerman could be arrested as early as this week.

Like many of you, I rely heavily on Ancestry.com to provide me access to genealogical source materials.? The difficulty I have had with these materials over the years is in simultaneously getting source media objects/images onto my desktop and linked to a viable copy of a family tree.? Well, it looks like Family Tree Maker 2012 (FTM 2012) finally has solved that problem for me.
Given that most of the ManyRoads readership are Windows users, the following section may have only limited value to you.? However if you are a Linux or Mac user or if you are contemplating transitioning operating systems environments (or mixing them), I think you might find my journey of value.
I think most of you know, by now, that I am primarily a Linux user.? Currently my business and personal PCs are running Ubuntu variants for our general computing and technical development needs, most generally Xubuntu 12.04. As a rule, I do not buy Windows software.? My typical experience has been that I can easily find Open Source software with the same or better functionality than that available on either Windows or Apple at a much lower cost (read, Free).? However, when I read that FTM 2012 was able to synch with Ancestry.com and synch across my PC and tablet platforms; well, I just had to give FTM a try.
My initial attempt at installation involved using Wine (Windows Emulator Environment).? To quote the folks at Wine:
Wine lets you run Windows software on other operating systems. With Wine, you can install and run these applications just like you would in Windows.
Wine is still under active development. Not every program works yet, however there are already several million people using Wine to run their software.
Sadly, FTM 2012 failed to run for me after installation under Wine. Because I had yet another installation option available to me, I did not bother to figure out why Wine did not work (sorry).
My next attempt involved installing FTM 2012 on my Windows XP Virtual machine running under Xubuntu (My virtual WinXP PC is installed in an environment using Oracle Virtualbox OSE.). For those who are unfamilar with VirtualBox, here?s what they say about themselves:
VirtualBox is a powerful x86 and AMD64/Intel64 virtualization product for enterprise as well as home use. Not only is VirtualBox an extremely feature rich, high performance product for enterprise customers, it is also the only professional solution that is freely available as Open Source Software under the terms of the GNU General Public License (GPL) version 2.
Now back to my tale, this second installation went very well. Although I did decide to make a few modifications to my WinXP Virtual environment for a better operating experience as well as an improved look & feel, specifically:
- I modified my standard WinXP desktop settings to use Clear Type (prettier fonts)
- I upped my Virtual PC memory from 256 to 768 MB, to speed things up because FTM seems a tad memory heavy to me (in terms of ?apparent? response time)
- I added additional disk space to allow for smoother operation (another little improvement to response time was noted)
Because one of the major reasons I spent money on FTM was the synch between my Desktop and Ancestry? I began with a link to my Ancestry account. Here are my basic, ?initial? observations:
- FTM 2012 synchs quite well with pre-existing Ancestry data.? Not fast but thoroughly!
- Media does indeed download!? Yay!
- Finally, to my joy and surprise, I have an easy method to correct errors on my Ancestry Trees.
Other nice features/ options I have noticed thus far include:
- You can exclude Ancestry family Trees from automatic searches (the little leaf thingees)!? Those error-prone, inaccurate Family Trees can now be easily ignored. As they say in Germany: Gott sei dank! (Praise to God!)
- FTM allows ?enhance record images? to be downloaded from Ancestry.com; so much better to see them with?
- It is easy to define a specific location for your FTM files, data, images, etc.; this allows me to place everything in a shared Linux/Windows file area.
In the main, this seems to have been money well spent!? As I learn more about FTM 2012, I will post noteworthy items on ManyRoads.

Too late for Easter: Chocolate printer to hit eBay in April, cost $4,000
Confection connoisseurs hoping to skip the whole "molded chocolate" routine for something more constructive won't have to wait long: Choc Edge's delectable 3D dessert printer is almost ready. The Choc Creator is the brainchild of Liang Hao and a kitchen of assistant cooks -- additional research at the University of Brunel, software by developer Delcam, oversight from the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council and funding from the Research Councils UK's Digital Economy program. Hao founded Choc Edge to distribute the completed machines, the first of which will be available from eBay on April 10th. Of course, pre-orders are also available for £2,488, or just under $4,000. Yes, the price of printing your own sweets is steep, but when you take that first bite into your custom Engadget logo -- won't it be worth it?
