Verizon Galaxy S4 Developer edition goes on sale for $650

Galaxy S4 Developer Edition

For sale directly through Samsung with no Verizon subsidy available

A few weeks ago we learned that Samsung was planning to bring a Developer Edition of the Galaxy S4 to both AT&T and Verizon customers.The Verizon handset has gone on sale first, and is available through Samsung starting today for $649.99. Since this version is only available through Samsung, there will be no subsidy for those looking to use their Verizon upgrades.

This version of the Galaxy S4 will be virtually identical to the version available through Verizon, with the important difference of shipping with an unlocked bootloader. This will enable users to install custom software on their devices right out of the box. However, with bootloader unlocking methods already available for the Verizon and AT&T versions of Galaxy S4, the value of a factory unlocked bootloader is arguable. It is worth noting that supporting developer editions such as this is important to ensure their continued future existence, especially when the day may come that Samsung bootloaders do not have unlocking methods available.

McCain says Putin's sheltering of Snowden ?reminiscent? of Cold War

Sen. John McCain weighed in on the Edward Snowden saga Tuesday, saying that Russia's actions in the wake of the accused National Security Agency leaker's reported arrival in Moscow harkens back to the Cold War.

"It's reminiscent of the days of the Cold War, when you hear a Russian spokesman saying that [Snowden?s] not in Russia when every shred of evidence indicates that he is,? McCain said on CNN. ?We've got to start dealing with Vladimir Putin in a realistic fashion for what he is. He?s an old KGB colonel apparatchik that dreams of the days of the Russian empire, and he continues to stick his thumb in our eye in a broad variety of ways. Most importantly to me, of course, and should be to the world, is their continued support of [Syrian President] Bashar al Assad and the massacre taking place in Syria."

McCain's comments echoed what fellow U.S. lawmakers said about Putin on Sunday.

"Putin always seems almost eager to stick a finger in the eye of the United States?whether it is Syria, Iran and now of course with Snowden," New York Sen. Charles Schumer said on CNN's "State of the Union." "Allies are supposed to treat each other in decent ways."

"The freedom trail is not exactly China-Russia-Cuba-Venezuela," South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham said on "Fox News Sunday." "So I hope we?ll chase [Snowden] to the ends of the Earth, bring him to justice and let the Russians know there?ll be consequences if they harbor this guy.?

At a news conference in Finland on Tuesday, Putin said Snowden was still in the transit area of Moscow's Sheremetyevo International Airport, and that Russia would not hand him over to the American government.

Putin added that he hoped the Snowden case would not affect Russia's relations with the United States.

"We consider the attempts to accuse Russia of violation of U.S. laws and even some sort of conspiracy, which on top of all that are accompanied by threats, as absolutely ungrounded and unacceptable," Russian foreign minister Sergey Lavrov said earlier Tuesday. ?There are no legal grounds for such conduct of U.S. officials.?

Speaking in Saudi Arabia, U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry said, ?We are not looking for a confrontation. We are not ordering anybody. We are simply requesting under a very normal procedure for the transfer of somebody.?

Obama 'disappointed' in Voting Rights Act ruling

WASHINGTON (AP) ? President Barack Obama says he's deeply disappointed with a Supreme Court decision halting the use of a key provision in the Voting Rights Act.

Obama says in a statement Tuesday that voting discrimination in the U.S. still exists. He says the high court's ruling is a setback but that efforts to end voting discrimination will continue.

Obama says the decision overturns well-established practices that for decades have helped making voting fair in places where historically there has been discrimination. He's calling on Congress to pass laws to ensure every American has equal voting access.

The justices said in a 5-4 ruling Tuesday that the provision can't be enforced until Congress comes up with a new way of determining which states and localities require close federal monitoring of elections.

NEW YORK (AP) ? A $100,000 prize for military writing has been awarded to an author of fiction.

Tim O'Brien, known for books such as "The Things They Carried" and "In the Lake of the Woods," has received the Pritzker Military Library Literature Award.

The honor, announced Tuesday, has previously been given to acclaimed historians such as James McPherson and Rick Atkinson. O'Brien is the first fiction writer to win.

The 66-year-old O'Brien served in the Vietnam War from 1968-70 and often draws directly on his experiences as a soldier.

Officials mum over probe linked to Pats' Hernandez

NORTH ATTLEBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) ? Authorities continue to investigate, but not talk about, the killing of a semi-pro football player whose body was found a mile from New England Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez.

A spokeswoman for the Bristol County district attorney's office said Sunday that officials are not releasing details. Spokeswoman Yasmina Serdarevic said officials also are not talking about the cause of death of 27-year-old Odin Lloyd, whose body was found on Monday. His death was ruled a homicide.

Hernandez was questioned and his home searched as part of the police investigation into the Dorchester man's death.

State police officers and dogs searched Hernandez's North Attleboro home for more than three hours on Saturday.

An attorney for Hernandez has said he would not comment on the searches.

New England Patriots spokesman Stacey James has said the team does not expect to comment during the police investigation. NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell was waiting for the legal process to take its course.

The Patriots drafted Hernandez out of Florida in 2010. He has since combined with Rob Gronkowski to form one of the top tight end duos in the NFL. He missed 10 games last season with an ankle injury and had shoulder surgery in April but is expected to be ready for training camp. Last summer, the Patriots gave him a five-year contract worth $40 million.
