Top elected officials in key beef-producing states Thursday toured the sole remaining plant in the country where "lean, finely textured beef" ? otherwise known as "pink slime" ? is manufactured. They were there to show support for the much-maligned filler and the jobs they say its production creates.?
Crisis management experts say it will take more than a tour and a few burgers to rehabilitate the product's image. Turning around the negative perception will take an all-hands-on-deck effort including social media, traditional advertising and endorsements from bold-face names in health and food safety. Oh, and a new nickname other than "pink slime." That's job No. 1.
The Beef Products Inc., processing plant in South Sioux City, Neb., is ground zero for fears about the meat scraps treated with ammonium hydroxide and added to other ground beef. Meat industry supporters including Govs. Terry Branstad of Iowa and Rick Perry of Texas planned to tour the plant Thursday and sample the product.

"It's the perception problem. They have this moniker now and they can't seem to get the slime off of them," said?Marcia Horowitz, senior executive vice president at Rubenstein & Associates. Ideally, a new name would be both "accurate and non-scary," she said, although she would shy away from using the word "beef." Consumers might view using this word to describe a filler as misleading and stick to calling it pink slime.
For the industry, scrubbing all traces of the phrase "pink slime" from their communication is crucial, said Mike Johansson, owner of marketing consulting firm Fixitology and a lecturer in the communications department at the Rochester Institute of Technology. Referencing the nickname without actually using it is the first step to shifting customer perception, he said.
The term was coined by a scientist at the U.S. Department of Agriculture in what he thought was an internal e-mail.?Consumer groups picked up on the phrase, which ultimately led to a public outcry over its use.??
One aspect of the textured beef that seems to elicit a particularly strong "ick" factor is the use of ammonium hydroxide in the production process.?Beef Products should minimize its use of those words, too, Johansson said. "If there's any mention of the word ammonium, you start thinking of household floor cleaner. It's human nature."
Horowitz said the political charm offensive is a good start for the industry's rehab efforts but only a first step. "If you get enough credible, high-level people maybe you can start a campaign," she said. "People in the industry, academics, former FDA officials. ? I think you will slowly perhaps get a viral campaign out there that will get it back into the good graces of the consuming public."
Both Horowitz and Johansson speculated that the beef industry might make a play for consumers' heartstrings.
"Focus on jobs," Horowitz said. The Associated Press reported that some 650 Beef Products employees found themselves out of work when the company shut down its other facilities. Since meat containing the filler is cheaper, Horowitz said a focus on affordability could also be a good strategy.
"Nostalgia is popular right now," Johansson said. "Get back to the nostalgia of beef and how American it is."
Cargill already has warned that eliminating use of the filler will lead to higher hamburger prices, just in time for the summer grilling season.
Current and former employees at the Waterloo, Iowa, BPI plant react to recent reports that claim some products containing boneless lean beef trimmings are harmful to consumers.
Johansson said a risky move with a potentially high payoff would be for Beef Products to let ordinary consumers "tour" their plant? via YouTube and invite feedback on social media sites, with real-time responses from a company employee to allay concerns. Americans tend to be squeamish about how our food is made, but now that the curtain has been pulled back on this particular practice, greater transparency might be the better option, he said.

The crew of the International Space Station (ISS) briefly took refuge in escape capsules as a piece of space junk drifted nearby.
The debris - a discarded piece of Russian rocket - was detected on Friday when it was too late to move the ISS.
Nasa said the debris was barely close enough to be a threat but that precautionary measures had to be taken.
It is the third time in 12 years that the ISS has faced a possible collision with space junk.
In June, a piece of debris came within 335m (1,100ft) of the platform.
The ISS is currently manned by three Russians, two Americans and one Dutch astronaut.
They were ordered by ground control to move into two Soyuz escape capsules in case the station was hit, but a Nasa spokesman said they were given the green light to return to the main station at 0238 GMT on Saturday.
The "sheltering exercise" was carried out with "due diligence and in a very precautionary and conservative fashion", said the unnamed spokesman.
"Everything went by the book and as expected, the small piece of cosmos satellite debris passed the international space station without incident."
Russia's space agency said the debris had passed the station at a distance of 23km (14 miles).
"The cosmonauts have returned to performing their previously assigned work," an official told Interfax news agency.
Nasa says it is actively tracking some 22,000 pieces of space debris, but there are millions of objects left over from decades of space travel drifting in Earth's orbit.
They range in size from smaller than a centimetre across to large chunks of rockets, defunct satellites or discarded fuel tanks.
All are travelling at several kilometres per second and could cause serious damage to the ISS or vital satellites if they collided.
The single biggest debris-generating event happened in 2007, when China used a missile to destroy one of its own satellites. The explosion created more than 3,000 trackable objects and an estimated 150,000 debris particles.
Then in 2009, a Russian and American satellite collided, releasing tonnes of debris.
Efforts are being made to draw up an international code of conduct for space exploration to avoid such incidents happening again.
The US announced in January that it was backing EU countries in working towards the code to address long-term safety and security concerns and establish "guidelines for the responsible use of space".
Countries backing the code would also commit to exploring space for peaceful purposes only and to not attacking each other's satellites.
But critics say such a code would not be legally binding, and concerns remain about countries being obliged to share information on satellites used for military purposes.
India, China and Russia, all of which have advanced space programmes, have not yet said they will back the code.

WATERVILLE, Maine (AP) ? With the ground clear of winter's snow, about 100 searchers aided by tracking dogs failed to turn up any new clues Saturday as they renewed their search for a Maine toddler who's been missing for more than three months.
Volunteers, firefighters and game wardens met with police Saturday morning, then began searching woods and fields in Waterville for any sign of Ayla Reynolds, Department of Public Safety spokesman Steve McCausland said.
Searchers targeted places that were not thoroughly searched over the winter when the ground was covered with snow.
"The weather conditions were ideal, and the snow's gone, so that's why the ground search was resumed today," McCausland said.
Ayla was 20 months old when she was last seen the night of Dec. 16 at her father's home in Waterville. She was reported missing the following morning when her father, Justin DiPietro, said he discovered her bed empty.
Ayla's mother, Trista Reynolds, lives in Portland.
Police are treating her disappearance as a crime, but no one has been charged. An undisclosed amount of Ayla's blood was found in the partially finished basement that DiPietro used as his bedroom, and police have said DiPietro and two other adults in the home that night haven't been totally forthcoming.
DiPietro has said he has no idea what happened to his daughter or who is responsible.
Police have received 988 tips and searched a five-mile swath around DiPietro's home, McCausland said. Maine State Police, the Maine Warden Service and Waterville police have spent more than $100,000 in overtime alone on the case, he said.
Investigators continue to interview people and the crime lab continues to analyze items connected to the case, but talks with DiPietro, his girlfriend and sister have broken down, McCausland said.
"They have stopped talking to us," he said.
DiPietro did not immediately respond to a message left Saturday on his cellphone.
Although searchers found no signs of Ayla, they found the remains of 53-year-old Steven Brandon of Waterville, who was reported missing in 2004, along Messalonskee Stream, McCausland said.
The remains have been taken to the state medical examiner's office, but foul play is not suspected in his death.
Brandon's identification was found among the remains, he said.

The video for video for "Give Me All Your Luvin," "GGW" is not plot-driven, but rather an assemblage of striking images that recall the dark, sexed-up era she ushered in with her "Vogue" video and which reached its apex with the release of her "Sex" book and Erotica album.

A few times in the video (check 1:10), Madonna and her dancers are definitely "vogueing" — or at least as close to it as she's gotten since she struck her most famous pose in 1990. There's also something to be said for the gay culture references in both videos. Madonna made vogueing mainstream in 1990 with her hit, but the highly stylized form of dance was actually born in the late-'80s Harlem gay ballroom scene (see the amazing documentary "Paris Is Burning" if you want to know where vogueing really came from). She embraced the connection then and appears to be doing the same here. In "GGW," we have two male models gnawing on the same apple, dancers in heels (and little else) and many, many suggestive close-ups celebrating the male form.
"Human Nature" The "Human Nature" video is most remembered for Madonna's black latex bodysuit, and she resurrects the look for "GGW ." Beyond the suit itself, the "Nature" video also cast Madonna and her dancers in all black and set them against an all-white background, a style choice she uses frequently throughout "Girl." Like the "GGW" clip, the vid for "Nature" was directed by a well-known fashion photographer, Jean-Baptiste Mondino, who also helmed Madonna's controversial video for "Justify My Love."
"Justify My Love"
Speaking of which, Her Madgesty is getting awful handsy with her sexy dancers here, and late in the video, we find Madonna and her dancers really going for it, writhing in a pile and feeling each other up. The "Love" video was, of course, banned from MTV in 1990 for its depictions of sex acts. Set in a voyeuristic hotel, the "Love" clip includes what we can only refer to as an orgy sequence, and she recalls that a bit here, albeit in a tamer fashion. The scene in "GGW" is less explicit because it's not as direct about its subject matter — being sexy is part of the "GGW" narrative, while making a grand observation about full-on sex was at least part of the point of "Justify My Love."
"Like a Prayer"
Madonna wouldn't be Madonna without a direct reference to religious iconography. Here, we get a dancer wearing a crown of thorns. Her video for "Like a Prayer" famously featured Catholic symbols, including stigmata and burning crosses, and a dream about making love to a saint on an alter. Madonna herself has even donned a crown of thorns onstage. During her performance of "Live to Tell" on her Confessions Tour, Madonna sang from a massive mirrored cross while sporting the crown.

Citing forecasts by the independent Officer for Budget Responsibility, Osborne also said borrowing in the current fiscal year will be 126 billion pounds ($199 billion), a billion pounds less than his target. He forecast a drop to 120 billion pounds next year, then 98 billion pounds in 2014.

Budget speculation has focused on an expectation that Osborne will announce a cut in the 50 percent tax rate assessed on income above 150,000 pounds ($238,000). That rate potentially hits 43,000 taxpayers, the top 1 percent.
